Grand Island: History, Agriculture and Art
Accommodation in Grand Island
Get to know Grand Island through its history, agriculture, public art and seasonal experiences. When planning your trip, it is especially helpful to distinguish between year-round indoor exhibits and offerings with specific seasonal windows.
Museum and Local History
The Stuhr Museum features year-round indoor exhibits in the Leo B. Stuhr Building and the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda. From May through September, the 1890s Railroad Town is also open, where visitors can step back in time. This means year-round indoor exhibits are complemented by a seasonal visitor experience. Exhibit programs may change. Check the dates if the Railroad Town is an important part of your stay.
The historic eastern Railside walking route offers a different perspective on local history. It passes through Grand Island’s original town plan and includes, among other sites, the Hall County Courthouse and a diner that has served Coney dogs since 1923. This gives you the opportunity to explore the city’s history through both museum exhibits and a walk through its historic town plan.
Agriculture in Nebraska
Raising Nebraska is dedicated to agriculture in Nebraska. A 25,000-square-foot interactive experience shows how food gets from farm to table. Hands-on, interactive exhibits explore the state’s agricultural past and future; individual exhibits may change. Each month, programs and events for visitors of all ages aim to inform, engage and inspire curiosity. If you want to attend a specific program, check the dates in advance.
Events and Seasonal Experiences
Fonner Park is the permanent venue for the Hall County Fair. Thoroughbred horse racing at the racetrack is a separate offering: races take place from February through May, and annual schedules may change. At Stolley Park, visitors can ride the Stolley Park Miniature Railroad in summer; its operating days may also vary. If you plan to attend any of these offerings, check the specific dates before your visit.
Public Art and Parks
Grand Island is a partner in Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska. New sculptures are installed each year around the historic Railside District, where visitors can explore them on their own. Because the annual installations may vary, check the current selection if you are interested in specific works. Grand Island also has 34 parks covering a total of 437 acres. This acreage refers to the park system as a whole, not to any one park.
Getting There and When to Visit
Nonstop flights operate from Central Nebraska Regional Airport (GRI) in Grand Island to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Routes and schedules may change, so check the connection for your travel dates. The seasonal windows also differ: Railroad Town operates from May through September, horse racing takes place from February through May, and the Miniature Railroad runs in summer. Plan your trip around the offerings that matter to you, and check their current dates.
