Wayne: Planetarium, Art and History
Accommodation in Wayne
Wayne offers a range of interests to choose from when planning a stay: campus sites, art and performing arts, architectural history, and an annual city festival. If you’re looking for a hotel in Wayne, considering the reason for your trip can help you decide where to start. The following places and events offer specific points of interest to help you plan.
Planetarium and Campus Trails
The Fred G. Dale Planetarium is located on the Wayne State College campus, in the Carhart Science Building. Public shows are scheduled regularly. The projection system can display 500 million stars. A particular show and the planetarium’s technical capacity are two different aspects of a visit. If you plan to attend a show, check the current schedule.
The Wildcat Fitness Trail is a section of the city of Wayne’s 6-mile biking and walking trail and is located on the Wayne State College campus. Wayne’s current trail network connects with the college’s Fitness Trail. The arboretum also extends across the entire campus. It serves the region as a living museum of trees and plants.
Another named site within the city is the 1.92-acre Roosevelt Park. It is located at the south end of Nebraska Street along the Wayne Pedestrian Trail and Logan Creek. Together with the campus-wide arboretum, it offers two different perspectives on trees and plants: the arboretum on the college campus and the park along the Wayne Pedestrian Trail and Logan Creek.
Art and Performing Arts
The Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery is located in the U.S. Conn Library. Art forms represented there include drawings, paintings, digital art, sculpture, ceramics, and other media. The works are by students, faculty, and guest artists. The range spans various artistic media and the different groups that exhibit their work in the gallery.
The performing arts also offer several specific points of interest. Wayne State College presents more than 100 free performances each year for the surrounding communities. The WSC Black & Gold Performing Arts Series presents fully staged opera and theater productions annually. The Ramsey Theatre is located in the Peterson Fine Arts Building and seats up to 560 people. Check the current schedule if a particular performance is important to your travel plans.
Museums and Historic Architecture
The Wayne County Museum is housed in the Rollie Ley Mansion, built in the 1890s. A distinctive architectural feature of the museum is its four original marble-clad fireplaces, which served as coal stoves. Here, building history and furnishings can be seen in a specific building and its preserved details.
The Wayne Commercial Historic District offers another perspective on the city’s history. The district includes 68 buildings in Wayne’s central business district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic district and the Wayne County Museum represent different aspects: an ensemble of buildings in the business district on the one hand, and a museum in a mansion from the 1890s on the other.
The Wayne Chicken Show
The Wayne Chicken Show takes place annually on the second Saturday in July. The program includes a parade, chicken contests, games, dancing, and entertainment. If the show is the reason for your trip, you can plan your dates around this annual Saturday event. The other destinations offer different points of interest—from art and performances to campus trails and architecture.
