The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, also known as Mount Charleston, offers year-round recreation opportunities. Rising from the Mojave Desert, the Spring Mountains form a forested, spring-fed alpine retreat. Hiking trails, scenery, and cultural themes offer different ways to plan your trip.

Scenery and Orientation Along the Scenic Byway

The 36-mile Mt. Charleston Scenic Byway runs along three state highways: Lee Canyon Road (SR 156), part of Kyle Canyon Road (SR 157), and Deer Creek Road (SR 158). It connects U.S. 95 with Mount Charleston. Along the byway, vegetation changes from sagebrush to Joshua trees, piñon pines, ponderosa pines, and junipers, and finally to white firs. The changing scenery accompanies the drive along the route described here.

Hiking Trails by Trail Character

More than 50 miles of maintained hiking trails run through the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. The Acastus Trail is an easy-to-moderate, 3-mile, wheelchair-accessible trail. It passes historic Civilian Conservation Corps facilities built in the 1930s. The stroller-friendly Kunav Huveap loop trail also runs around the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway.

The South Loop crosses the tree line at approximately mile six and ends with a strenuous half-mile climb to the summit of Charleston Peak. Mary Jane Falls is a more challenging 3.2-mile loop trail in the Kyle Canyon area. When choosing a route, you can consider the length, whether it is a loop, and the difficulty information for each trail.

More Activities Nearby

Rides on the Bristlecone Skyway chairlift reach a maximum elevation of 9,370 feet nearby. Lee Canyon also has a lift-served downhill mountain bike park. When snow depth reaches at least 12 inches, Foxtail becomes a winter recreation area for sledding and tubing. These options offer different experiences: a chairlift ride, a mountain bike park, or a snow-dependent activity.

Culture, History, and the Visitor Gateway

The Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway is a 128-acre site with public buildings, trails, and exhibits. A plaza at the Gateway honors Nuwuvi heritage. The seven Southern Paiute tribes of the Southwest consider the Spring Mountains a place of creation.

The Silent Heroes of the Cold War National Memorial honors thousands of people who died while performing covert work for the United States government during the Cold War. It also commemorates the 14 people aboard a fatal United States Air Force flight that crashed on Charleston Peak in 1955. An overlook along the Pack Rat Route provides information about the memorial and the 1955 plane crash.

Guided interpretive hikes at Mount Charleston last 60 to 90 minutes and cover topics such as geology, erosion, plants, and wildlife. Programs and registration requirements may vary.

Plan Before You Go

From December through March, park restrictions apply at Mount Charleston. Snow chains and/or four-wheel-drive vehicles may be required for winter traffic. Check current conditions before you go. Conditions can also change rapidly at high elevation on the South Loop; also check current conditions on the Acastus Trail.

The Upper Bristlecone Trailhead is an access and entry point to the Mt. Charleston Wilderness Area, but it is currently closed due to trail damage. Check its status before driving there. Much of Lee Canyon has no cell service, and service is limited in Kyle Canyon. Since network coverage can change, check current coverage before your trip.
