Paradise Valley: Mining History and the Santa Rosa Range
Accommodation in Paradise Valley
Paradise Valley combines a long mining history with opportunities for activities in the Santa Rosa Range. Its historical connections span from Peter Skene Ogden’s journey through the area in 1828 to structures added to the National Register in the 1970s and 1990s. The limited supplies available in town and road conditions are also important to consider when planning. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay mainly on historical sites or activities in the surrounding area.
Mining History and Supplies
Hudson’s Bay Company explorer Peter Skene Ogden passed through Paradise Valley in November 1828. Farms in the valley supplied nearby mines in the Nevada and Idaho territories. Agriculture was therefore part of the area’s economic history: it helped supply the mines. Paradise City was a supply center for mining from 1878 to 1920. The historical milestones thus span Ogden’s journey through the area, agricultural supplies, and the time-limited center of Paradise City.
Historic Houses and Mill Construction
The Micca House is a historic residence built in 1885 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The Paradise Valley Ranger Station was added to the same register in 1996, and the Silver State Flour Mill in 1976. The three structures offer different historical points of interest: a residence, a ranger station, and a mill complex.
The Silver State Flour Mill was the first facility of its kind in Humboldt County and one of the earliest in Nevada’s history. The complex includes a mill building and a warehouse. At the mill building, the lower section is made of sandstone blocks and the upper section of rough-hewn timber. This combination of materials makes the mill’s construction a distinctive detail of its historic character.
Fishing and Winter Sports in the Santa Rosa Range
The Santa Rosa Range can be reached via the access road from Highway 290 toward Paradise Valley. In the area around Paradise Valley, trout fishing is possible in streams in the range; regulations apply. The range also offers opportunities for winter sports: cross-country skiing and downhill skiing are available north of Winnemucca. The surrounding area thus offers a choice of activities along streams as well as two different types of skiing.
A Long-Standing Local Restaurant
The Paradise Valley Saloon & Bar G was established in the early 20th century. Its operating history spans more than a century without interruption; check whether it is currently open before visiting. Historic photographs, a wood-burning stove, and numerous dollar bills attached to the ceiling define the interior. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and a Basque-style chorizo sandwich. The selection may change, so it is advisable to check the current menu before visiting.
Supplies and Roads
Grocery supplies in Paradise Valley are limited; there are no fuel stops. Immediately north of town, State Route 290 becomes an unpaved road, and conditions can vary seasonally. The access road to the Santa Rosa Range runs from Highway 290 toward Paradise Valley; vehicle requirements and road conditions can also change. Before setting out, check current supplies, road conditions, and vehicle requirements.
