Accommodation in Colebrook
For a trip to Colebrook, you can think of outdoor experiences and local history as two distinct areas of interest. Nature destinations include waterfalls, river routes, and a rail trail; cultural attractions range from the first church founded in Colebrook to museums and a center for arts and heritage. This lets you plan your stay around whether you’d rather explore trails and rivers or include local history and art in your plans.
Waterfalls, River Routes, and Trails
The waterfalls at Beaver Brook Falls plunge over rocks and ledges more than 75 feet high. Beaver Brook Falls Wayside has a scenic picnic area with picnic tables and a small picnic shelter. In practical terms, the waterfalls offer a rocky backdrop, while the wayside provides the described picnic facilities.
The Colebrook Riverwalk is an easy hiking loop along the Mohawk and Connecticut Rivers. It is easily accessible from downtown Colebrook. If you’d like to include an easy loop along two rivers in your plans, these are the trail’s main features. Check current access and trail conditions before your visit, as they may change.
The 10-mile Upper Coos Recreational Rail Trail runs alongside the wild and scenic Connecticut River, from Colebrook to Beecher Falls. Its level surface and scenic views make it particularly suitable for hiking. It is also used by cyclists, ATV riders, snowmobilers, dog sledders, and horseback riders. The trail thus offers a variety of ways to travel the route. In Colebrook, parking for the Upper Coos Recreational Rail Trail is available at the Town Parking Lot on Main Street.
Local History and Culture
Founded in 1802, Monadnock Congregational Church was the first church established in Colebrook. Its first building on Main Street was dedicated in 1831. These dates mark two distinct milestones: the founding of the church and the dedication of its first building. If you’re interested in the town’s early history, these dates provide a specific historical reference.
The Colebrook Area Historical Society is on the third floor of Colebrook Town Hall at 17 Bridge Street. The Society’s museums house about 15,000 objects connected with local history. These include fine and folk art, clothing, textiles, produce, and household items. Tours require advance contact; regular opening hours are not currently listed. If you’re planning a tour, contact the Society in advance.
The Tillotson Center in Colebrook is a center for local heritage and the visual and performing arts. It is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or by appointment. Planning a visit here differs from visiting the Historical Society: specific opening hours are listed for the Center, while tours at the Society require advance contact. The Tillotson Center’s hours may change; check them before your visit.
