Errol: Nature, Canoeing, and Snowmobiling
Accommodation in Errol
Errol is in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods tourism region and includes half of Umbagog Lake. The Androscoggin River begins at the lake in Errol. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: water activities, nature watching, and snowmobiling. If you’re looking for hotels in Errol, first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.
Lake, River, and Access
Umbagog Lake State Park has 33 remote campsites and four remote cabins around the lake. The sites and cabins can only be reached by boat. This makes them clearly different from a hotel stay: access by boat is part of the planning. In Errol, you can reach the NH State Boat Launch on the Androscoggin River via North Mountain Pond Road. The remote sites and cabins are accessible only by boat; the named road leads to the boat launch. Launch conditions and restrictions may change, so check the official access information before you travel.
Water Activities and Nature
Umbagog Lake State Park has a beach area for swimming; seasonal operations may vary. Canoes and kayaks can be rented at Mollidgewock State Park, where operations also vary seasonally. The park is on the banks of the Androscoggin River in the Thirteen Mile Woods Scenic Area. Androscoggin Wayside Park is a scenic place to picnic and a popular spot for canoeing. The options differ depending on whether you want to swim, rent a canoe or kayak, or combine canoeing with a picnic. Check the park information for your travel dates if swimming or rentals are important to you.
Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge is near the destination. Popular activities there include fishing, hunting, wildlife watching, and hiking. In addition to the water activities, the area around Errol offers other things to enjoy, including nature watching and hikes.
Snowmobiling and Trails
Errol is a popular vacation destination for snowmobilers. The L.L. Cote store in Errol sells snowmobiles; its inventory may change. The Umbagog-Millsfield ATV Club trail system also includes Errol. Routes and club rules may change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information before setting out. Snowmobiling and ATV riding are different activities, so be sure to check the applicable guidance and conditions for each. A 2024 trail funding document states that a layer of material is needed on about 1.25 miles of the Long Pond Trail in Errol because of large rocks. It specifies that more than 18 inches of snow are required to groom the trail. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest status before setting out.
