Longport borders the bay along its northwest coast and the ocean along its southeast coast. These two directions help pinpoint the local waterfront: there is a bay side and an ocean side. If you are considering Longport as a coastal travel destination, this is a concrete first point of reference. Information about beach access and activities provides additional local reference points.

Beach Access and Seasonal Information

Longport lists beach ramp access at 16th, 27th, 32nd, 33rd and 35th Avenues. Beaches are lifeguarded during the summer months; seasons and dates may change from year to year. If lifeguarded beaches are important to your plans, check the current seasonal operating information before your visit. Public restrooms are available seasonally at the Longport Community Building on 33rd Avenue and at the beach. They are open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Kayak and Surfing Locations

Longport lists four locations for launching and retrieving kayaks: between 14th and 15th Avenue, between 22nd and 23rd Avenue, between 27th and 29th Avenue, and at the drainage pipe between 32nd and 33rd Avenue. The designated surfing and wave-riding locations are 12th, 22nd, 28th and 32nd Avenue. The location descriptions distinguish between the two activities: kayak locations are generally named as stretches between avenues, while surfing locations are identified by individual avenues. If you plan either activity, you can use the locations designated for it as a guide.

Other Local Places

The recreation area at 33rd Avenue and Atlantic Avenue includes tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, as well as a playground. Alongside the coastal activities, it offers specific facilities for a range of recreational interests. If you are planning a trip with varied interests, you can consider this area as a point of reference in its own right, alongside the beach and water activities.

Point Park is at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 11th Street and includes a fishing area. The park, including the fishing area, is inaccessible until construction is complete. If you are considering this location in your plans, take the access restriction into account until the work is finished.

Dorothy’s Park, also known as McGee Park, is on 22nd Avenue. It was created with a pavilion, landscaping and an enclosure. The two names refer to the same park; the alternate name may be helpful when finding your way around.

Local History in Longport

The Longport Historical Society Museum is next to Borough Hall at 2301 Atlantic Avenue. Today, the museum is housed in the United States Coast Guard Building. The building served as Longport’s second Borough Hall until 1990 and was built in 1849 between 32nd and 34th Avenues. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s construction history, its former municipal function and its current use as a museum. For travelers who want to include local history in their decision alongside the coastal setting, the museum offers a specific cultural point of interest.
