East Brunswick Township offers two distinct focuses for planning a trip: natural areas with trails and outdoor activities, and local history reflected in a historic church building, a museum collection and a Historic District. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, this distinction can help you decide whether nature experiences or local history should play a greater role in your trip. In addition to sites within the township, there are also conservation areas that span several municipalities.

Nature and Landscape

Tamarack Hollow Preserve has two miles of hiking trails. Activities there include hiking, walking, birdwatching and photography. The preserve is considered a family destination in both summer and winter. The trail length and variety of outdoor activities give you concrete points to consider if nature is a focus of your trip.

Bicentennial Park offers boating and fishing, as well as walking paths and hiking trails. This adds activities that differ from hiking, walking, birdwatching and photography at Tamarack Hollow Preserve. The two places therefore offer different emphases among East Brunswick Township’s nature and recreation options.

Ireland Brook Conservation Area spans East Brunswick and South Brunswick. Its trails extend for several miles through deciduous forest and open meadows, as well as along Ireland Brook. The landscape of Jamesburg Park Conservation Area is different: it includes sections in Helmetta, Monroe Township, Spotswood and East Brunswick, and a distinctive extension of the Pine Barrens. Its features include sandy uplands, pitch pines, oaks, blueberries and huckleberries, as well as Atlantic white cedars in the wetlands. Rare and endangered plant and animal species are also found there. By comparison, Ireland Brook Conservation Area is defined by trails through forest, meadows and along the stream, while Jamesburg Park is defined by its distinctive Pine Barrens landscape and its species.

History and Culture

The East Brunswick Museum is located in the Historic Village of Old Bridge in East Brunswick Township. It is housed in the former Simpson Methodist Church building, which was built in 1862. The collection includes local pottery from the Bissett, Morgan and Van Wickel stoneware factories. The building’s former role as a church and the pottery collection thus highlight two different aspects of local history.

The Historic District of Old Bridge is also part of the township’s history. Because of its location along the navigable section of the South River, it attracted settlers as early as 1685. The later register listings followed at different times: the district was added to the New Jersey State Register in 1975 and to the National Register in June 1977. This makes it possible to distinguish the early settlement history from the later listings in the two registers.

In the wider region, Playhouse 22 is a volunteer-run community theater in Central Jersey. Another cultural tradition is a tour along candlelit paths at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. In 2025, this tradition had been in existence for about 32 years. If you would like to include the tour in your plans, please check whether one is scheduled during your travel dates.
