Scenery and Trails
South Brunswick Terrace is a neighborhood in the low-lying section of South Brunswick Township’s Inner Coastal Plain. Several trails in the township pass through a variety of landscapes. The Farrington Lake Trail connects Davidson’s Mill Pond Park with the Ireland Brook Conservation Area. It runs for 1.1 miles along Lawrence Brook and the shore of Farrington Lake. Great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and great egrets are often seen along the trail.
Several specific distances are useful for comparing the routes: the Forest Brook Trail is 0.8 miles long and accessible from the Riva Avenue Trailhead. The Ireland Brook Trail is 1.8 miles long and accessible from the parking lot on Parkview Court. In Davidson’s Mill Pond County Park, more than two miles of trails run along historic Davidson’s Mill Pond and through meadows and woods. This gives you a choice of different trail lengths, each with its own landscape.
Activities also vary from one area to another. In South Brunswick, Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park offers opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing. The Ireland Brook Conservation Area, which is shared by South Brunswick and East Brunswick, is suited to quiet recreational activities such as hiking, photography, and nature observation. The Farrington Lake Trail, meanwhile, centers on the connection between the brook, the lakeshore, and birdwatching.

In Monmouth Junction, the Freedom Trail passes six historical markers related to the Revolutionary War history of South Brunswick Township. The Monmouth Junction Freedom Trail follows a disused railroad right-of-way from New Road to Stouts Lane. The markers give the route a historical focus, while the two endpoints also provide clear reference points for planning.
The historic Van Dyke Farm in South Brunswick Township was preserved in 2011 and covers nearly 200 acres. It is eligible for inclusion in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. The farm also has a nearly one-mile-long hiking trail through wooded wetlands and a mature beech forest.
Woodlot Park in Monmouth Junction hosts summer concerts and family events. Behind the park, three trails marked by an Eagle Scout wind through the woods. The trail entrance is next to Field 3, the field farthest from the Community Center, near the sledding hill. Sondek Park also has nature trails.
