Carlsbad: Nature, Recreation and Culture
Accommodation in Carlsbad
When planning a trip to Carlsbad, you can choose from a variety of focuses: desert flora and wildlife, trails, water activities and culture. These destinations offer different ways to spend your time in the area.
Nature and Trails
Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park features more than 40 animal species and hundreds of plant species from the Chihuahuan Desert. A 1.3-mile walking route takes visitors through the park and back. The distance therefore describes the full round trip. Seasonal interpretive programs are also available. Nature enthusiasts can combine wildlife and plant life with a walk and a seasonal program here.
The Ocotillo Hills Nature Trail is a scenic 0.9-mile trail featuring native flora and wildlife. At the summit, there is a viewpoint overlooking the city. The La Cueva Non-Motorized Trail System nearby offers a different kind of trail experience: it includes more than 15 miles of maintained trails, used primarily by mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders. While the State Park walk is described as an out-and-back route, La Cueva is a larger trail system serving several user groups.
Cavern and Bat Program
In the area around Carlsbad, you can explore Carlsbad Cavern at your own pace in two ways. You can enter by elevator or on foot, and an admission ticket is required. Check current reservation and admission requirements before your trip. The Bat Flight Program also takes place in the area: as part of this ranger-led program, visitors can watch thousands of bats fly out of Carlsbad Cavern. Program times vary by season; check them before your trip. This makes a cavern visit and the seasonal viewing program two distinct experiences.
Water and Recreation
Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area is a 125.6-acre park with playgrounds, picnic tables, restrooms, boat launches, a designated swimming area and the Beach Band-shell. Pecos River Recreation Area in central Carlsbad offers boating, waterskiing and fishing on Lake Carlsbad. Carlsbad Water Park has a different focus: its amenities include five water slides, two of them high-speed, a lazy river, a pool area and an accessible children's area with level entry.
For recreation away from the water, Riverview Park is home to the Carlsbad Labyrinth, which is 40 feet in diameter. Carlsbad Disc Golf Course has concrete tee pads and DISCcatcher baskets. Golf is also available: Lake Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course has a nine-hole par-3 course and a standard 18-hole course. It also has a driving range, a putting green and a pro shop. The course formats and practice facilities offer golf visitors different options, while the labyrinth and disc golf course provide other recreational activities.
Local History and Art
Carlsbad HeritageWalks takes visitors through the center of the community and shares facts and stories about local buildings. Heritage Park also has a historical connection: it contains the Eddy House, described as the first homestead built in Eddy County. The two attractions have different focuses—the walk highlights buildings in the town center, while the house is notable for its historical designation.
Carlsbad Museum and Art Center displays early pottery, textiles and artifacts from Indigenous peoples. The collection also includes paintings by New Mexico artists from the early 20th century. Visitors interested in art and history can explore examples of Indigenous culture and regional painting from a specific period.
