Gallup: Route 66, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Gallup
Gallup combines Route 66 history with museums, public art, and recurring events. The different themes give you practical starting points for planning your trip; for events and facilities with access information, check dates and visiting conditions in advance.
Route 66 and Downtown
The El Rancho Hotel is a historic hotel on Route 66 in Gallup. It was built on U.S. Route 66 in 1936 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today’s Coal Avenue in downtown was also originally part of Route 66. Gallup’s downtown is designated as a Historic District; many buildings there are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Another way to explore downtown is to visit more than 30 colorful murals, which are within walking distance of one another. Together, Route 66 history, the designated Historic District, and the murals show different sides of the cityscape: street and architectural history on one hand, and public art on the other. The murals offer a distinct focus without centering on any one building.
Museums and Cultural Institutions
The Navajo Code Talker Museum at the Gallup-McKinley County Chamber of Commerce honors the contribution of Indigenous Americans to the United States’ victory in World War II. Check current access information before visiting. The George Galanis Multicultural Center focuses on something different: its programs and art offerings honor the cultures of neighboring Native American communities as well as Gallup’s history. The center also houses a collection about the history of the Navajo Code Talkers.
The Storyteller Museum and the Route 66 Theater are part of the Gallup Cultural Center. The El Morro Theatre is used for film screenings, performing arts, and other cultural events. The cultural formats mentioned here therefore range from remembrance of the Code Talkers and programs on cultural and local history to film and performing arts.
Events and Their Dates
The Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial takes place every August and features Indigenous art, dances, music, and rodeo. The first event was held on September 28, 1922. The historic date and the current annual August date are two different points of reference; exact dates and program details for future events may vary.
The Gallup Summer Indian Dances and Art Market also takes place annually. It features traditional dances and the opportunity to meet dancers and musicians; dates and participating groups vary. For the 2026 event, the Courthouse Square, 215 West Aztec Avenue, is listed as the venue. Check current information for later events before planning your trip around them.
Near Gallup, the Red Rock Balloon Rally has been held annually since 1981; event dates may change. The Gallup Arts Crawl program includes art and craft activities for children, art demonstrations, book signings, open galleries, and live performances. Its schedule may also change. The Gallup 9th Street Flea Market offers food, handicrafts, jewelry, livestock, and household goods; the mix of vendors may vary.
Landscape and Other Interests
Red Rock Park is near Gallup and outside the city center. It covers 640 acres and is characterized by red sandstone cliffs that formed more than 200 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era. The acreage indicates the size of the park, while the geological detail describes the cliffs’ formation.
Another nearby attraction is the Red Rock Park Museum. Interpretive exhibits there present the culture of the Ancestral Puebloans and today’s Zuni, Hopi, and Navajo communities. Check current opening arrangements before visiting.
For golf enthusiasts, Fox Run Golf Course is described as having 18 holes, a length of 6,400 yards, and a par of 71. The number of holes, length, and par provide three different points of comparison if golf is one of your travel interests.
