Aztec offers travelers a range of options for their stay: trails and outdoor activities, as well as specific historical points of interest. When making your selection, it is worth distinguishing between individual trail sections, loop trails and mountain bike routes. The historical themes also highlight different aspects—from a marked river crossing and museum artifacts to buildings in Pioneer Village. You can first consider whether trails, landscape or history should shape your stay.

River Trails and Individual Routes

The 2024 city plan lists the Animas River Trails System as having 17.9 miles of existing trails. Additional segments may change the total length. For the Ruins Road Trail, the same plan notes two specific features: the section is ADA-accessible and runs parallel to a bike route. Check accessibility conditions before your trip; future construction may change trail conditions.

The trail through the Aztec West great house is mostly paved and wheelchair-accessible. The Riverside Park Loop offers a scenic walk along the Animas River; future maintenance or improvements may change trail conditions. For the Tiger Lake Loop, both its loop format and length are specified: the loop around Tiger Lake is 0.5 miles long. Access to this trail may change due to future infrastructure work. The Tiger Lake Loop is distinguished by its specific distance, while the Riverside Park Loop is characterized by its walk along the river.

High Desert, Trails and Other Activities

Mountain View Trails is a singletrack area in the high desert on BLM land. It offers views of the San Juan Mountains and Shiprock. Along with the type of trail, two specifically named vistas are among the area's features. If you take the landscape into account when choosing an outdoor activity, you can consider these views as a focus in their own right.

In the Aztec area, Alien Run consists of three loop-style mountain bike trails totaling more than 15 miles. The description highlights different features than the one for Mountain View Trails: for Alien Run, it specifies the number of loops and their total length, while Mountain View Trails is characterized by its high-desert setting and views. This makes it possible to distinguish between the information given about the mountain biking areas without treating them as the same offering.

The Aztec Disc Golf Course is located in Aztec and has 18 baskets. Details may change with future improvements. Disc golf therefore adds a different sport to the trail and mountain biking options.

Historical Traces and Collections

The Old Spanish Trail Retracement at Aztec Ruins marks the spot near the Animas River where Antonio Armijo crossed the river on his first journey from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Los Angeles, California. The historical connection is therefore tied to a specific journey and a particular river crossing.

The Aztec Museum and Pioneer Village displays local and regional historical artifacts in a two-story building with multiple rooms. The collection includes artifacts related to the region's ancestral Pueblo peoples, later Indigenous residents, nearby Hispanic communities and early Anglo pioneer families. These different groups give the collection a broad historical connection to the communities of the region.

Pioneer Village includes original and reconstructed versions of a total of 14 shops, public buildings and private homes. Alongside the artifacts in the museum, visitors can also explore different types of buildings there; originals and reconstructions are both part of this selection. Another way to learn about the area's history is the Historic Walking Tour brochure published by the museum. The tour begins at Aztec Ruins National Monument. If you are looking for a specific connection to a travel episode, you can distinguish the marked river crossing from the broader perspective offered by the museum collection and the types of buildings in Pioneer Village.
