When looking for hotels for a stay in Santa Ana Pueblo, the focus of your trip can guide your choices: Tamaya and Pueblo history, the Rio Grande and the bosque, or golf and recreational activities. Keep one important visitor requirement in mind when planning: Public access to sites and events on the tribal lands of Santa Ana Pueblo is at the discretion of the tribal community. So check in advance whether a visit is possible for your specific destination.

Tamaya: History and Crafts

The Old Pueblo of Santa Ana, known as Tamaya, is listed on the National Register of Historic Properties. Members of Santa Ana Pueblo have lived at their present location since at least the late 16th century. Tamaya, the Old Santa Ana Pueblo, was founded after the area was reconquered in the late 17th century. To understand the timeline, distinguish between these two details: the first concerns the Pueblo members’ present home, while the second concerns the founding of Tamaya.

The historic church in Tamaya was restored with funds from the Pueblo. For centuries, Santa Ana Pueblo has made distinctive pottery for domestic and ceremonial use. Santa Ana potters make sturdy vessels from red clay they collect along the banks of the Jemez River.

The Tamaya Cultural Learning Center offers tours; its museum provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Santa Ana Pueblo. Participation in the tours may depend on arrangements made by the resort.

Rio Grande and Bosque

Santa Ana Pueblo’s restoration program is restoring six river miles of the Rio Grande, which runs through the Pueblo. The Santa Ana Rio Grande Bosque is maintained for cultural and recreational uses by tribal members and guests. In the bosque, the restoration program also restores native wildlife habitat. Thus, restoration of river stretches and habitats, and preservation of cultural and recreational uses, are distinct priorities.

Golf and Recreational Activities

The Santa Ana Golf Club has three nine-hole golf courses named Tamaya, Cheena, and Star, which run through the high desert hills. Santa Ana Pueblo owns the 18-hole Twin Warriors Golf Course.
