Agua Fria: History and Landscape

Explore Agua Fria through its local history, archaeological traces, and the landscape along the Santa Fe River. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering which of these aspects is most interesting for your trip: the historic route through the town center, Pindi Pueblo, or the parks and trails along the river. These topics offer different ways to plan your visit.

Historic Routes and Architectural History

The original route of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro runs through the center of the traditional Village of Agua Fria. The Village was established as a Traditional Historic Community in 1995 by the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners. Another historic landmark is San Isidro Catholic Church, built on the road in the Village of Agua Fria in 1835. The route, the Village’s designation, and the church represent different aspects of local history: a historic thoroughfare, the community’s recognition, and a 19th-century building.

Pindi Pueblo and Archaeological History

Pindi Pueblo was located on the north bank of the Santa Fe River in the Village of Agua Fria. The site is one of at least two significant late Pueblo-period archaeological sites in the Agua Fria area. Excavations beneath Agua Fria Road suggested in 2009 that two prehistoric settlements below the site may date back to around 3,000 BC. Pindi Pueblo thus links the Village’s history with archaeological traces that may date far back into prehistory.

River Landscape and Settlement

The Santa Fe River flows year-round. Together with cold springs and fertile alluvial deposits, it shaped the area’s settlement and agricultural history. In both prehistoric and historic times, cold springs helped spur settlement in Agua Fria. At San Isidro Crossing, fertile river deposits and springs made the area a productive farming region. Water, soil, and settlement are part of a connected history of this landscape.

Park Trails and Reunity Resources

The existing Romero Park, formerly known as Agua Fria Park, is located in the traditional Village of Agua Fria, off Caja Del Oro Grant Road. A 0.7-mile trail connects the parking lot to Agua Fria Park along the river. This provides a specific trail connection to consider when planning a stay. Reunity Resources is located across from the parking lot at the trailhead of the San Ysidro River Park Trail, where San Ysidro Crossing meets the Santa Fe River. Reunity Resources is a community farm in the Village of Agua Fria, adding an aspect of community agriculture to the historical and landscape themes.
