Burlington: Textile History, Parks and Concerts
Accommodation in Burlington
Burlington offers several distinct ways to plan a trip: textile history, historical exhibits, concerts and parks, each with its own focus. You can decide whether you’d like to center your stay on culture, a live concert or time outdoors.
Cultural History in Burlington
At the Textile Heritage Museum, early textile machinery sits alongside fabric samples, quilts, clothing, photographs and artifacts from mill workers. The exhibits range from machinery and materials to clothing and photographic records. Group tours of the museum are available by appointment. If you’re planning a group visit, arrange a time before you arrive.
The Whistlestop exhibit offers a different historical perspective. It includes a scale model of Company Shops depicting the site as it would have looked in 1870. The model makes the historical site easier to envision, while the exhibits at the Textile Heritage Museum focus on different aspects of textile history.
Company Shops Station is Alamance County’s passenger train station. It uses Burlington’s former roundhouse. The building’s former function and its use as a station give railroad enthusiasts a concrete point of interest alongside the exhibits.
The Dentzel Carousel and Recreation at City Park
The restored Dentzel Carousel is located in Burlington City Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dentzel Carousel Company built the carousel in Philadelphia around 1906 to 1910. Its details include 46 hand-carved wooden animals. Its construction period, maker and craftsmanship give the ride its own cultural and historical significance; riding it is a separate experience.
Burlington City Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The rides operate seasonally. The park also offers a ride on a classic diesel-powered miniature train; its operation depends on the season and weather. The park’s opening hours therefore don’t necessarily match the operating hours of individual rides. If you’re planning to ride, check the hours before your visit.
Town and Country Park offers a different focus: this 50-acre natural area runs along the banks of the Haw River and has about 2 miles of hiking trails. Burlington therefore offers both rides at City Park and trails through a natural area. The two parks differ mainly in whether you’d prefer to focus on a specific attraction or a route outdoors.
Concerts and When to Visit
The Paramount Theater is in the heart of historic downtown Burlington and hosts live concerts. The 4th Fridays in Downtown Burlington concert series is another option to consider when planning your trip: it runs from May through September. If you’d like to plan your stay around the series, check the dates for the current season.
When looking for a hotel in Burlington, it can help to decide on your preferred focus and travel dates first. For a concert trip, the specific event dates are key; for a visit to City Park, you should also take into account that the rides’ operation depends on the season and weather. Cultural history, concerts and park visits each offer a different reason to plan a stay, without any single activity needing to define your entire visit to Burlington.
