Art, Galleries and Buildings

Located downtown, the Florence Thomas Art School offers more than 100 hands-on classes and workshops in visual arts and traditional crafts each year. Subjects include painting, drawing, watercolor, textile arts, mixed media, and more. The number of classes in the annual program may change; subjects and dates vary by season. If you’d like to include a class in your trip plans, check the schedule for your travel dates.

From June to October, downtown galleries extend their hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. Visitors can discover local art and enjoy complimentary refreshments. Confirm the date for the year you plan to visit if you’d like to coordinate your stay with it. CatchLight Gallery is a photography gallery in the downtown Arts District and is open to the public. When the gallery is open, you can talk with the artists about their work, style, and inspiration.

More than 15 murals form a walking tour through downtown; the collection may change as murals are added or replaced. The Parkway Theater is a historic landmark in downtown West Jefferson, with an Art Deco facade and matching marquee. St. Mary’s Church is also part of the town’s history: the historic church has been a focal point of the local community for more than a century. Its architectural features include elaborate stained-glass windows and a distinctive steeple.

Nature and Parks

As of September 6, 2026, Elk Shoals Access at New River State Park in West Jefferson was open for day use. Activities include hiking, picnicking, and river access.
