Swannanoa: Nature, History, and Seasonal Experiences
Accommodation in Swannanoa
Swannanoa Between the River and Local History
Swannanoa offers a range of starting points for a trip: riverside scenery and trails, local history, and seasonal events. Charles D. Owen Park is located on the Swannanoa River. Beacon Manufacturing Company and the Alexander Inn represent different chapters in local history. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether nature, history, or a particular event date should shape your stay.
Hiking Trails, River, and Fishing Ponds
Charles D. Owen Park has the one-mile Figure Eight hiking trail, as well as two large fishing ponds. The Swannanoa area also includes scenic trails, lush forests, and the peaceful Swannanoa River. Hiking, fishing, and exploring nature are among the activities associated with this landscape. The park therefore offers a specific hiking trail and ponds as distinct outdoor options.
Please note that a temporary closure may be in effect. Check the current operating conditions at Charles D. Owen Park before visiting.
Visitors can also explore the River, Jones Mountain, and Dam Pasture trails between sunrise and sunset. Daylight access information may change, so check the current conditions before your visit. At Warren Wilson College Farm in Swannanoa, visitors can bring family members, guests, or children to see the farm animals. Here, too, check the access conditions before arriving, as visitor information may change. Visiting the farm offers a different connection with nature than hiking or fishing: the animals are the focus.
Industrial History and Historic Homes
Beacon Manufacturing Company operated in Swannanoa from 1924 to 2002 and was once the world’s largest blanket manufacturer. Its former mill site is now an open area next to historic homes in the former mill village. These homes are now private residences. The company’s history and the village offer different perspectives on local history.
The Alexander Inn is another part of the story, with a different historical perspective: it had opened to visitors by 1820 at the latest. The original building still stands on Old US 70, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is considered the oldest building in Buncombe County continuously occupied by the same family. At Beacon, the company’s years of operation take center stage; at the Alexander Inn, an early role as a visitor destination and a surviving building come together.
Seasonal Dates for Your Stay
“Groovin’ on Grovemont” is a free concert series in Grovemont Park, next to the Swannanoa Library. The seasonal schedule may change. If a concert is important to your travel dates, check the event schedule in advance.
The Swannanoa Market returns in the 2026 season. It offers fresh food, along with products from local vendors and artisans. Dates and offerings may change, so check the market schedule if you are planning a visit.
The concert series focuses on music in the park, while the market features fresh food and products from local vendors. This difference may help you time your trip around the seasonal offerings. Trails, the river, and historic sites offer other reasons to visit that are not tied to an event date.
