Iredell County is part of the Charlotte Region in North Carolina and stretches along the shores of Lake Norman. When planning your trip, you can choose from several areas of interest: the lake, greenway trails, historic sites, and events in towns throughout the county.

Lake Norman and Waterfront Trails

Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, with 520 miles of shoreline. Lake Norman State Park is located on the lake in Iredell County, 39 miles north of Charlotte. The park offers mountain biking trails, and boats are also available to rent. Check boat rental availability before you arrive.

The Lake Norman section of the Catawba River Blueway offers a different perspective on the area. The 31-mile route runs along the Catawba River and begins at the northern end of Lake Norman. There are several boat launches along the route. This offers a choice of different ways to enjoy a stay by the water: mountain biking trails in the state park and a longer route along the river.

Greenways for Cyclists, Hikers, and Joggers

The Gregory Creek Section of the Statesville Greenway is 1.3 miles long and intended for joggers, hikers, and cyclists. The section runs through a wooded area along Gregory Creek and Fourth Creek, with access points at both ends. This describes a specific stretch with a stated length and landscape. The Girl Scouts, Hornets' Nest Council Trail is a separate trail that runs through an area designated by North Carolina as a significant natural heritage area.

Historic Sites and Collections

Fort Dobbs was the only permanent provincial frontier fort in the colony of North Carolina. It offers insights into the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years' War, which lasted from 1754 to 1763. Statesville has five historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Broad Street/Davie Avenue, Mitchell College, Academy Hill, Race Street, and the Downtown Statesville Commercial District.

Iredell Museums permanently displays a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy known as Margaret the Mummy. The collection also includes historic buildings dating from 1790 to 1890 that originate from Iredell or Alexander County. The museum features interactive, family-friendly exhibits whose content changes over time.

Events and Special Outings

Troutman hosts the annual National Balloon Rally at the Iredell County Fairgrounds. Check event dates before planning your trip. Love Valley hosts rodeos several times a year; it is also worth checking the dates in advance. The town has the character of a Western town, with a general store, saloon, blacksmith shop, and stores selling equestrian gear. Love Valley also has many miles of horseback riding trails, ranging from wide gravel paths to steep mountain trails.

For a different kind of outing, Southern Distilling Company offers tours of its 30,000-square-foot facility. Reservations may be required. You can distinguish this visit from the historic sites, trails, and events when putting together your itinerary.
