Discover Spruce Pine
Accommodation in Spruce Pine
Spruce Pine offers several distinct ways to choose a destination: a museum with exhibits about the mountain region and mining, festivals with a range of themes, community park facilities, and activities on the North Toe River. You can decide which of these matter most to you—museum and history, an event date, or time outdoors.
Museum and Minerals
The Museum of North Carolina Minerals is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Its hands-on, interactive exhibits explore the formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the 3,000-year history of mining. The story of the landscape and mining history is presented alongside the minerals and gemstones that feature in events in Spruce Pine.
The NC Mineral and Gem Festival has been held annually in Spruce Pine since 1959. Vendors from across the country showcase jewelry, gemstones, and minerals. The festival also includes mine tours, demonstrations, and opportunities to buy distinctive gemstones and jewelry; individual offerings may vary. Dates and the event location may also change. Check the details for the festival year in which you plan to travel.
On mine tours offered during the NC Mineral and Gem Festival, you can visit an operating quartz mine; participation and the mine location may change. Participants may keep what they find, provided it fits on their lap for the return trip.
Festivals and Arts
The North Carolina Hellbender Festival is a free, one-day event held every Labor Day weekend in Downtown Spruce Pine. The program includes live music, regional food, craft vendors, and hands-on activities focused on conservation and river health. Dates and program details may change; check the information for your travel year.
As part of the Toe River Arts Studio Tour, participating artists exhibit their work at the Spruce Pine Gallery.
Parks and Water Activities
Brad Ragan Park has picnic shelters, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, a multipurpose court, a dog park, the Mineral City Mile Trail, and a swimming pool. Individual facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.
Admission to Spruce Pine’s parks is free. There is a small fee to use the swimming pool at Brad Ragan Park in summer; fees may change. Brad Ragan Park is listed as open from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. Check that the hours are current before your visit.
On the North Toe River, you can go tubing or kayaking; you can also fish in the “Mountain Heritage” trout waters. Together with the trail and other facilities at Brad Ragan Park, these offer a range of ways to include outdoor activities in your travel plans.
