Serpent Mound, prairie flowers, and hiking trails give Adams County a variety of reasons to visit. Its cultural heritage is represented by a distinctive earthwork; on its nature trails, factors to consider include trail length, loop or out-and-back routes, and seasonal observations. You can tailor your plans to what interests you most: a historic landmark, landscapes, or hikes with a specific destination.

Serpent Mound and Cultural Heritage

Serpent Mound is an internationally renowned National Historic Landmark built by Ohio's Indigenous cultures. The nearly quarter-mile-long earthwork depicts a giant serpent uncoiling. Its size and shape make it an impressive destination for travelers interested in Ohio's cultural heritage. Unlike the hikes described here, this site centers on a single, clearly recognizable monument.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

A 4.4-mile loop trail of moderate difficulty runs along Buzzardroost Rock. The Joan Jones Portman Trail is 1.6 miles long and ends at the Peebles dolomite cliffs, overlooking the valley below. The Helen C. Black Trail at Cedar Falls is a three-mile loop that ends at an overlook above the falls. The distances help you gauge the length of each hike; their endpoints offer different highlights: a valley view from the dolomite cliffs or an overlook above the falls.

The trail systems in the prairie areas also differ. Lynx Prairie Preserve has three clearly marked, interconnected loop trails totaling 1.3 miles. Parts of the trail system pass through forests dominated by native Virginia pines and red cedars. Chaparral Prairie is a 130-acre State Nature Preserve in Adams County, Ohio. It has three loop trails and an out-and-back trail totaling 1.6 miles. Lynx has a network of interconnected loop trails, while Chaparral has three loop trails plus an out-and-back trail.

Prairie Flowers and Seasonal Nature Watching

The greatest variety of prairie flowers at Chaparral Prairie can be seen during the first three weeks of August. Along the Lynx Prairie trail system, you can look for crested coralroot in July and August. The time periods overlap in August but offer different nature-watching opportunities: prairie flowers at Chaparral Prairie and the chance to look for crested coralroot along the trails at Lynx Prairie. If flower diversity is especially important to you, you can plan your trip for the first three weeks of August.
