Champaign County: Nature, Trails and Aviation History
Accommodation in Champaign County
Champaign County offers several distinct focuses for planning a trip: nature and trails, caves, aviation and history. If you’re planning a hotel stay, you can first consider which of these interests you’d like to shape your trip. Experiences range from rare plant communities and hiking trails to historic aircraft, museums and events.
Nature and Trails
Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is a National Natural Landmark and is considered the largest and finest example of a boreal and prairie fen complex in Ohio. It is home to many rare plants and animals, and its collections of orchids, prairie flowers and woodland wildflowers are also outstanding. The focus is therefore on both the distinctive landscape and the diversity of its plant and animal life.
Kiser Lake State Park has four hiking trails totaling 4.5 scenic miles. Motorboats are not permitted on the water; the park has a boat ramp and public docks. The site combines practical options for a stay by the lake with designated trails on land.
The Simon Kenton Trail is a 35-mile multi-use trail from Springfield through Urbana to Bellefontaine. It connects Champaign and Logan Counties to a regional trail system. Parking and trail access in Champaign County are available at County Line Road, Woodburn Road, State Route 55 and the restored Urbana Depot. For planning purposes, it’s worth distinguishing the route you want from the appropriate access point: the roads and depot mentioned are parking and access options, while the overall distance describes the trail’s full course.
Caves and Aviation
Ohio Caverns offers two tours with different focuses. The Historic Tour covers the area originally explored from 1897 to 1925. The Natural Wonder Tour follows a one-mile loop and includes Crystal King, the largest stalactite in Ohio. You can choose between a cave area presented in its historical context and a tour that highlights its length and a remarkable geological formation.
Champaign Aviation Museum offers flights in a fully restored B-25J Mitchell from World War II. The aircraft seats seven people. For travelers interested in aviation, this is a different way to experience the subject than visiting a museum: the focus here is a flight in a specific historic aircraft model.
Two museums in Urbana also explore aviation history. Grimes Flying Lab Museum presents the history of Warren Grimes and the Grimes Manufacturing Company and houses the Grimes Flying Lab Beech 18 aircraft. Mid America Flight Museum North restored the Travel Air 6000, which returned to flight in 2021.
Museums and History
Champaign County Historical Society Museum in Urbana collects, preserves and interprets artifacts, documents and other resources related to the history of Champaign County. The museum hosts a historical lecture every month; topics may vary. Its collection and lecture program offer two distinct ways to learn about the county’s history.
Johnny Appleseed Educational Center and Museum in Urbana houses the world’s largest collection of memorabilia and information about John “Appleseed” Chapman. The museum also includes a memorial orchard with apple trees descended directly from trees planted by Johnny Appleseed. The collection and orchard each offer a distinct focus: memorabilia and information in one, and the inherited connection to the trees in the other.
In Mechanicsburg, the 1858 Meeting House is the town’s oldest surviving public building. The Pony Wagon Museum in St. Paris is located in the original Pennsylvania freight house and displays artifacts from the St. Paris area, including Walborn & Riker pony wagons. These two sites offer a tangible connection to historic buildings and regional objects, though they provide different kinds of museum experiences.
Lectures and Events
The largest annual event held by Champaign County Historical Society Museum is Oktoberfest, a fall fundraiser. Event details may change. The Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival takes place every third weekend in September; check the specific dates for the year before traveling. When planning, these events are different from museums and trails: they offer recurring occasions, and their exact dates matter for your travel plans.
