Discover Defiance
Accommodation in Defiance
Defiance offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: sites connected to fort history, local collections, and cultural offerings, as well as trails through wetlands, prairie, and forest. The rivers and recreational opportunities on the water also shape the options. Consider which focus matters most to you, then plan your visits and activities accordingly.
Fort History and Culture in Defiance
The Fort Grounds are located at the confluence of the Maumee River and the Auglaize River. Fort Defiance was built in 1794 by General Anthony Wayne; its grounds have been preserved and protected. Those interested in the history of the city and its surroundings can also visit the Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum, which preserves Defiance’s history and presents exhibits about it. Its collection includes Native American artifacts, coins, documents, stamps, military memorabilia, and other artifacts.
The Stroede Center for the Arts is located in a former First Baptist Church. The congregation was organized in 1846, and construction of the Romanesque-style building began in 1894. The center’s program includes the DCCC Performance Series, performances by the Young People's Theatre Guild and the Fort Defiance Players, music recitals, and other special events. It also houses the Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum. Tours of the Huber Opera House can be arranged to learn about its history.
Historical sites can also be found beyond museums and performances: Lock No. 37 of the Miami and Erie Canal stands at 309 Perry St. and commemorates the pioneers who built the community. Brick facades line the streets of the Downtown Defiance Historic District, where they have stood for generations. AuGlaize Village is a 120-acre reconstruction of early life in northwest Ohio. The Defiance County Historical Society founded the site in 1966; hands-on activities show what daily life was like in early Defiance County.
Nature Trails, Rivers, and Outdoor Recreation
The Penney Nature Center comprises 78 acres of wetlands, prairie, and woodland. Five trails there cover a total of 3.5 miles. The Oxbow Lake Wildlife Area offers a different landscape: its 435 acres are characterized by cottonwood, sycamore, oak, and hickory trees. Along the Maumee River, Independence Dam State Park covers 591 acres and offers access to boating, hiking trails, camping, fishing, and picnic areas.
The Reservoir Nature Trail connects two sections with different surfaces: an approximately 500-foot paved path leads from the parking lot to the woods; a roughly 2,500-foot boardwalk runs through the woods. The eight-foot-wide trail is multi-use and wheelchair accessible. For a different kind of water activity, the Defiance City Reservoir has a boat ramp for fishing. Gasoline-powered motors are not permitted there. The Maumee River Water Trail provides a larger route: it extends 107 miles from Maumee Bay on Lake Erie to the Ohio-Indiana border and is accessible at 39 points.
The route of the Defiance Section of the Buckeye Trail is also easy to trace: it crosses the Maumee River, passes through Pontiac Park, and then follows the Miami and Erie Canal Towpath through Independence Dam State Park. Pontiac Park commemorates the site described as the birthplace of Chief Pontiac; a marker identifies the historic location on the banks of the Maumee River. Groups of ten or more must submit a request through the “Contact Us” page to access Thoreau Wildlife Reserve. The reserve welcomes groups and individuals to experience the diverse ecosystems on the property.
