Whitehall: Parks, Market, and History
Accommodation in Whitehall
Whitehall, Ohio, can be explored through its parks, local events, and historic sites. Whitehall Community Park offers walking and nature trails, a disc golf course, and a canoe and kayak launch on Big Walnut Creek. Other parks offer a variety of amenities, along with glimpses into the area’s history.
Parks and Activities in Whitehall
At Whitehall Community Park, scenic walking and nature trails meet an 18-hole disc golf course. A canoe and kayak launch on Big Walnut Creek adds an option for both types of watercraft. The park brings different activities together in one place: a walk, disc golf, or a visit to the launch. The launch is a specific destination for anyone interested in canoeing and kayaking.
The other parks have their own features, too. John Bishop Memorial Park has walking paths and a splash pad. Norton Field Park has a walking loop. Lamby Lane Park offers a fully paved loop. Those comparing different walking options can choose between a loop and walking paths; the surface of the loop at Lamby Lane Park is also specified as paved.
Central Bark caters to a different interest, with fenced dog parks, agility equipment, and water stations. Operating conditions may vary depending on the weather. For organized play, there is also the versatile John Bishop Park Hockey Rink, a dek hockey rink. It can be reserved daily in one-hour time slots from 4 to 8 p.m. Outside reserved times, it is intended for open community play. Check current reservation conditions before visiting.
Market Dates and Gatherings
Market on the Green is a weekly municipal farmers market in Whitehall, Ohio. For travel planning, the specific date matters: check the listed market dates before traveling. This lets you plan a visit to the market as part of your stay without relying solely on its weekly schedule.
The Whitehall Historical Society also holds a regular public event. Its meetings take place at its headquarters in Whitehall Community Park on the second Thursday of each month and begin at 6:30 p.m. If you want to plan your visit around one, check the specific dates before traveling.
Historic Sites and Stories
The Whitehall Historical Society’s headquarters in Whitehall Community Park is a relocated Lustron home. The house was originally built in 1949 at 5099 Spring Valley Road in London, Ohio; London is about 40 miles west of Columbus. The building’s story therefore extends beyond Whitehall to its former location.
Another chapter in the area’s history is connected to John T. Ward. Before the Civil War, he established a station on the Underground Railroad in his home on the National Road, also known as U.S. Route 40. The house stood east of present-day Hamilton Road, in what is now John Bishop Park. The station helped enslaved people on their journey north.
The original five-over-four house on Whitehall Farm is also part of the National Road’s history. Traditionally, it was understood to have been an inn or tavern serving travelers on the road. The house was later demolished and is not a present-day attraction. Its traditional interpretation offers a glimpse into earlier uses along the travel route, not a preserved place to visit.
As you choose where to stay, consider which aspects of Whitehall are most relevant to your trip: walking paths and park amenities, a market day, or local history. The places and dates mentioned offer specific points of reference, while reservation and event conditions should be checked before each visit.
