More than 92 miles of trails for hiking, walking, and running shape the nature experience in Geauga County. The county also offers forests, wetlands, geological features, and a strong maple tradition. You can therefore tailor your stay to different interests: longer routes, nature observation, or culture and local events.

Trails and Routes Through the County

The Maple Highlands Trail consists of three connected sections. Together, they stretch for 21.1 miles, pass through Chardon and Middlefield, and run across the entire county. If you are planning a particular outing, check the current trail length and route: the route may change as future trail projects are completed.

Mountain Run Station provides access to the middle section of the Maple Highlands Trail. It also has a bicycle repair station available for free use. This makes it easy to combine a stop at the station with a practical stop to service your bike.

Landscapes and Natural Areas

The Maple Highlands Trail passes through forests, wetlands, farmland, and Amish settlements. The West Woods also offers a variety of trails for hiking, skiing, and horseback riding. Its Nature Center features a large wildlife-feeding area and interactive exhibits about nature.

In the 644-acre Big Creek Park, scenic Big Creek runs through the area from south to north, and the landscape features varied elevations. Mountain bikers can ride a six-mile wooded trail there. Since conditions can change seasonally, it is worth checking them before a planned ride.

Welton’s Gorge offers a different view of the landscape: it features a gorge measuring about 45 feet, with exposed Sharon Sandstone and Sharon Conglomerate dating back about 300 million years. The rock outcrops create a cool, moisture-rich environment where lichens, mosses, and ferns predominate.

Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve was designated an Ohio State Nature Preserve in 1999. The area includes Lake Kelso, a kettle lake formed by glaciers. Bald eagles, ospreys, tundra swans, loons, and various migrating ducks and geese use the lake at different times of year as a place to stay or rest during migration.

Nature and Astronomy

At Observatory Park, a trail with interactive stations illustrates the proportions of the orbits relative to the sun. Nassau Astronomical Station has a 36-inch Warner & Swasey telescope, considered one of the largest publicly accessible observing telescopes in Ohio.

Frohring Meadows also connects garden themes with natural history: the Pollinator Play Garden was added in 2022. In 2007, the band-winged dragonlet was discovered there; at the time, it was a species new to Geauga County that is normally native to Texas. The year and its classification at the time make the discovery a special episode in local natural history.

Maple Tradition and Seasonal Experiences

The Geauga County Maple Festival was founded in 1926 and is an annual tradition. It hosts Ohio’s largest maple syrup competition. During the Maple Sugaring Open House Weekends in March, maple syrup producers across the county open their operations. Visitors can learn about maple syrup production on a self-guided visit; check the dates before your trip.

Maple also plays a specific role in the landscape at Swine Creek Reservation: 32 acres there are used as a managed sugar maple stand.

History and Events

Century Village Museum first opened to the public on May 30, 1942. At the time, the 1838 Eleazer Hickox Home was the only historic building open to visitors; it still stands in its original location. This early history can be traced to a single building and its place in the museum’s opening at the time.

The Great Geauga County Fair is considered the oldest fair in Ohio. Held over Labor Day weekend on more than 150 acres, it features rides, food, livestock, live music, and shows. Main grandstand entertainment includes demolition derbies, truck and tractor pulls, and bull riding. Since the program may change, check event dates and program details if you want to plan your trip around it.
