A stay in Guernsey can put nature, water activities, glass history and seasonal events at the heart of your trip. To plan your visit, it’s worth first organizing the experiences that interest you most.

Lakes, Trails and Nature Watching

Seneca Lake covers 3,550 acres of water and 4,065 acres of land. Seneca Lake Park is in Guernsey and Noble Counties near Cambridge and can be reached via I-70 and I-77. There are five public boat ramps at Seneca Lake; one is located at Seneca Marina. These details provide different points of reference for a stay around the lake.

Boating, fishing, water skiing and tubing are all available at Salt Fork Lake. At the Lore City end of the Great Guernsey Trail, there is also a self-service kayak rental for the Leatherwood Creek Water Trail. If you’d like to combine trails with wildlife watching, you’ll find walking trails at Senecaville State Fish Hatchery, including a section of the Buckeye Trail. They are open daily from sunrise to sunset for wildlife watching; check access information before your trip.

The Welcome Center at Deerassic Park also offers a nature-focused experience: the 5,400-square-foot building showcases Ohio’s native wildlife through interactive, hands-on exhibits. Further afield in the region is The Wilds in southeastern Ohio. This nearly 10,000-acre wildlife conservation center was established on reclaimed strip-mining land.

Glass, History and Craftsmanship

The Guernsey County Museum is housed in a historic 199-year-old building considered Cambridge’s oldest half-timbered house. Exhibits include a replica coal mine, a recreated one-room schoolhouse and an area devoted to the county’s military history. The subjects range from work and education to the history of the region.

The National Museum of Cambridge Glass preserves the legacy of the Cambridge Glass Company, which produced hand-crafted glass from 1902 to 1958. Exhibits, interactive displays and demonstrations showcase glassmaking in Cambridge. Glass is also the focus at Mosser Glass: its shop for hand-crafted glassware is located in the heart of the factory. Factory tours at the historic site offer a behind-the-scenes look at glassmaking.

The Armstrong Covered Bridge, also known as Clio Covered Bridge, offers another glimpse of history. It is part of a walking trail in Cambridge City Park. The names and locations are easy to distinguish when planning: the bridge is in the park in Cambridge, while each museum showcases its own aspects of architectural and craft history.

Events and Special Times to Visit

From November 1 to January 1 each year, the light show at the Guernsey County Courthouse illuminates the historic 1881 building every evening with tens of thousands of colored lights. The lights are synchronized with traditional and contemporary Christmas music; check the schedule before your trip. The Guernsey County Fair is held annually in September. It features livestock shows, harness racing, truck and tractor pulls, live music, rides, games and a children’s zone. The exact dates of the fair vary.

The Pennyroyal Opera House also pairs a historic setting with live music: the restored building is located on the Historic National Road, and live bluegrass is performed there on Fridays. Homemade meals are served before performances; check the schedule before your visit. At the Dickens Victorian Village Welcome Center downtown, costumed helpers assist visitors. There are souvenirs, and the Imagination Station offers the chance to dress up in Victorian clothing.

The event dates offer different seasonal highlights: the fair takes place in September, the light show runs from November 1 to January 1, and the bluegrass program is held on Fridays. If a particular event is essential to your trip, check its dates against your travel period before booking a hotel.
