Trails, Scenery and Outdoor Activities
The Sorrowful Mother Shrine encompasses 153 acres of woodland and lawns surrounding the Sorrowful Mother Chapel. Paved paths lead to 40 grottos, including the Stations of the Cross and replicas of Lourdes and the Holy Sepulchre Grotto. The named grottos give the paths a clear religious theme; those interested can consider this a distinctive focal point of their trip.
The area’s landscape history is also part of its character. The Willard Marsh Wildlife Area was once surrounded by almost 13,000 acres of old swamp land. The North Coast Inland Trail offers a different point of reference: its section in Huron County runs from Wakeman to Bellevue, while the entire trail extends from Cleveland to Toledo. This makes it possible to distinguish the local section from the larger route without treating the two as the same stretch.
Greenwich Reservoir Park offers fishing opportunities. If fishing is important to your plans, check what’s currently available before your visit. For the North Coast Inland Trail, by contrast, the section’s route is especially relevant for planning: Wakeman and Bellevue mark its endpoints in Huron County.
History from Multiple Perspectives
Historic Lyme Village depicts life in the Firelands from the arrival of the first settlers in the early 19th century through the early 20th century. Pioneer Days is one of the Village’s special events. If you’d like to time your trip around this event, check the dates for your travel period.
Within Historic Lyme Village, the John Wright Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Another historic institution is the Firelands Historical Society: it is Ohio’s oldest museum and the state’s second-oldest historical society. Together, these subjects offer different ways to explore history—from a depiction of life across several eras, to an individual listed building, to the history of an institution.
Events, Motorsports and Golf
The Huron County Fair takes place once a year; dates and individual program items vary by year. Grandstand entertainment includes tractor-pull competitions, motocross and quad races, rodeo, rough-truck events and demolition derbies. If you want the Fair to determine your travel dates, check the schedule and program in advance.
The Huron County Fairgrounds offer camping. Confirm availability before you arrive. For motorsports enthusiasts, Summit Motorsports Park offers the entry-level Edelbrock Stock class for drivers with a valid license.
The public Eagle Creek Golf Club is located in Norwalk, Ohio, and is a par-71 golf course. Its landscape includes wetlands, waterways, wooded areas, bodies of water and valleys. The combination of water, wetlands, wooded areas and valleys shapes the course’s scenery.
Fruit picking, historic themes, fishing opportunities and events offer different focal points. When planning, you can first decide which of these activities you want to shape your visit, then check your travel dates against annual or scheduled offerings.
