When looking for a hotel in Mentor, you can plan your trip around what matters most to you: trails and views along Lake Erie, cultural history, live performances and sports offer different experiences. When choosing, it may also be helpful to consider whether you’ll be covering longer distances, visiting during particular seasons or planning around a specific event schedule.

Trails, Beaches and Protected Landscapes

The Buckeye Trail is 1,400 miles long in total, with around 12 miles running through Mentor. The route passes through Civic Center Park to overlooks with views of Lake Erie. The park also has 22 lighted pickleball courts and a paved bike path.

At Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, more than three miles of hiking trails wind through the area. They offer four distinct views: Mentor Lagoons Marina, Mentor Marsh, the elevated woodland and the Lake Erie shoreline. The scenery ranges from water and shoreline to woodland.

The Lake Erie beach at Headlands Beach State Park covers 35 acres. Visitors can sunbathe, swim and search for beach glass, and picnicking is also permitted in the park. A paved hiking and biking trail runs along the back dunes. Adjacent to the park is Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, one of the last protected areas of its kind in Ohio.

Mentor Marsh has been designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service since 1966 and is one of the most biodiverse areas along the shores of the Great Lakes.

Culture, Events and History

Wildwood Cultural Center & Park features a historic English Tudor-style mansion with 25 rooms on a 34-acre estate. The Cultural Arts Division at Wildwood Cultural Center offers programs, classes and special events. The year-round program includes live music and theater performances.

The Mentor Civic Amphitheater hosts concerts, theater and dance events, as well as spoken-word performances. Event dates may vary, so check what’s scheduled during your stay.

Mentor’s Commemorative Rose Garden also offers a range of places to spend time: several benches, a small pavilion, memorial walkways, shaded areas and different varieties of roses. The garden reflects Mentor’s past significance in horticulture: from the 1920s through the 1970s, the city was known as the “Rose Capital of the Nation.”

Another historical episode involves James Garfield. In 1880, during his presidential campaign, he used the porch of his home in Mentor as a platform to greet thousands of well-wishers.

Sports and Seasonal Visiting Hours

Mentor Ice Arena has two indoor, regulation-size ice rinks and a studio ice rink. Along with the pickleball courts and paved bike path at Civic Center Park, it offers a different range of activities from the trails and natural areas.

Carol H. Sweet Nature Center has seasonal public hours: from April through October, it is open Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m.; from November through March, it is open on the first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nature programs and guided hikes are offered at 2 p.m. every Sunday the center is open. The hikes are free with advance registration. Since hours and program details may change, check the current schedule before your visit.
