Lorain County lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie. The Black River flows through the center of the county and empties into the lake at Lorain Harbor. For nature experiences, the Lorain County Metro Parks system offers a wide range of landscapes and routes, with 28 nature preserves and more than 110 miles of trails.

Landscapes and Trails

At Miller Nature Preserve, the Avon Wetlands section winds through open wetlands. There are more than a mile of gravel trails there. The North Coast Inland Trail offers a different glimpse into the history of the trails: it was built along the route of a discontinued line of the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad.

The nature areas also each have their own distinctive features. Schoepfle Garden covers 77 acres of botanical gardens and natural woodland and borders the Vermilion River on one side. Miller Nature Preserve has a 5,000-square-foot conservatory, the first in Lorain County. The preserve also has a seasonal butterfly house; visiting dates may vary by season.

Gardens and Special Details

About 2,500 roses grow in 48 beds in the rose garden at Lakeview Park. The approximate number of plants and the specific arrangement of the beds give the garden a different character from the expansive natural areas at Schoepfle Garden or the open wetlands at Avon Wetlands. If you include several nature spots in your plans, it’s worth considering these differences when choosing where to go.

Culture, Performances, and Tours

The Oberlin Heritage Center offers public tours of its buildings year-round; seasonal closures may still apply. Check the dates before planning your visit. The Carnegie Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For performances, visit the historic Lorain Palace Theatre in downtown Lorain, Ohio: it has 1,400 seats and hosts concerts, plays, recitals, and more. Since the schedule may change, it’s a good idea to check the dates for your planned visit.

Another destination for a stroll around town is Historic Harbourtown 1837, a shopping district in Vermilion in Lorain County. It adds an opportunity to focus your visit on shops alongside the area’s theater and cultural venues.

Experiences and Tastes

The historic Lorain Lighthouse offers indoor tours by advance reservation. Sunset dinners are also available there by reservation; availability is seasonal. Confirm dates and make a reservation before your visit. If you’re looking for an active nature experience, Common Ground offers a public zipline canopy tour on a wooded, 30-acre site along the Vermilion River.

For wine and cider tastings, Paper Moon Vineyards also offers a light menu. When it’s busy, tasting availability may vary. Klingshirn Winery offers wine tastings at its winery in Avon Lake. Options range from tastings and guided visits to performances and nature experiences; check specific visiting conditions for seasonal or reservation-only offerings.

Planning Your Stay

An international airport in Cleveland is about 20 miles from Lorain County and is the main airport for Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide which experiences will shape your stay: nature areas, tours, theater dates, or tastings. Then compare your accommodation’s location with your own plans and take the relevant dates and reservation requirements into account.
