Youngstown combines a rich industrial history with art, science and hands-on experiences. The steel industry shaped the city in the 20th century; museums, a planetarium and places dedicated to horticulture showcase other sides of this destination. If you’re looking for a hotel in Youngstown, you can start planning your trip around the subjects that interest you most during your stay.

Steel History, Art and Historic Sites

The Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor explores the history of the steel industry and also covers the “last heats”: the final batches of steel produced before the plants closed. Life-size scenes illustrate both steelmaking and the lives of steelworkers. Industrial production and daily working life are presented side by side.

The Arms Family Museum offers another perspective on the city’s history. It preserves Greystone, a 1905 Arts and Crafts-style mansion, and features historical exhibits. These include the youth-oriented Anne Kilcawley Christman Hands-On History Room. The Butler Institute of American Art focuses on another subject: it was the first museum devoted exclusively to American art, and its collection spans three centuries.

Lanterman’s Mill also connects history with a vivid look at work in the past: the mill continues to operate as it did in the 19th century, grinding corn and wheat. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. While the Historical Center interprets the steel industry and its workers, the mill shows a historic milling operation still in action.

Science, Hands-On Experiences and Music

The Ward Beecher Planetarium offers astronomy education programs for public and private groups of all ages. At OH WOW!, the focus is on immersive, hands-on STEM activities for young people of all ages. Both places emphasize learning, but with different focuses: astronomy at one, practical STEM experiences at the other.

The Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum also recommends visits for young children, including babies. Walk-in visitors are welcome during opening hours. Since hours may change with the university schedule, it’s best to check them before your visit.

For music and the performing arts, the DeYor Performing Arts Center is an important venue: it is home to the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and includes the historic Edward W. Powers Auditorium and the Ford Family Recital Hall. The two named halls give the center distinct performance spaces for its cultural role in Youngstown.

Gardens, Parks and Downtown Destinations

Fellows Riverside Gardens offers tours by reservation and horticulture classes. Youngstown’s parks offer more ways to enjoy your leisure time, including golf, swimming, tennis, team sports, fitness, picnics and seasonal programs. If you’d like to compare two specific golf options, historic Wick Park has a nine-hole disc golf course, while Henry Stambaugh Golf Course is a historic municipal nine-hole golf course. Both have nine holes, but they feature different sports.

Wean Park in Downtown Youngstown is home to the Robinson-Shuba Monument, an outdoor monument commemorating “A Handshake for the Century” between George Shuba and Jackie Robinson. Also in Wean Park, which is part of the Raymond John Wean Foundation, the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre sits along the Downtown riverfront. The two destinations bring different themes together in the same park: a monument to a historic encounter and a riverfront event venue.
