Troy: History, Nature and Festivals
Accommodation in Troy
Troy, Ohio, brings together historic sites, natural areas and recurring events. These different highlights can help guide your plans for a stay: your visit might focus on the city’s heritage, its trails and landscapes, or a festival. If you’re looking for hotels in Troy, first consider which of these aspects of the city matters most for your trip.
History and Culture in Troy
The Overfield Tavern Museum is located in historic downtown Troy. The two-story log tavern was built in 1808 by Benjamin and Margaret Overfield. Over the course of its history, the Overfield Tavern served as a frontier tavern, inn, courthouse and general community meeting place. Its former role therefore went beyond that of an inn: it was also a place for legal matters and community gatherings.
The museum offers guided tours, self-guided exhibits and hands-on activities for children and the young at heart. It is open seasonally. So check the opening hours for your visit date if you plan to include the museum in your itinerary.
The historic Hayner Mansion is also part of Troy’s cultural offerings. It hosts art, music, classes and community events. In addition to the history of the Overfield Tavern, the city also offers a range of cultural activities.
Annual Events and Their Dates
The Troy Strawberry Festival takes place annually. The program includes live entertainment, a classic car parade and a 5K run. There is also an extensive food offering featuring strawberry specialties. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year of your visit before scheduling your stay around it.
Another annual event is Troy, Ohio PorchFest. The free music festival takes place in the Southwest Historic District, with dozens of bands performing on porches. Dates and programs may change. The two events have different focuses: the Strawberry Festival features, among other things, a parade, a run and strawberry specialties, while PorchFest centers on musical performances on porches.
Nature Trails and Wildlife
Hobart Urban Nature Preserve is located in the heart of Troy. It covers more than 80 acres and has just over 2 miles of walking trails. Activities include birdwatching, leisurely walks and nature observation. The acreage and trail length provide two different ways to gauge the size of the preserve.
Brukner Nature Center has 6 miles of nature trails that pass through woods, wetlands and prairie. The center is also home to more than 50 wildlife ambassadors, including native Ohio species that can no longer survive in the wild. They are featured in indoor and outdoor exhibits. Compared with Hobart Preserve, Brukner Nature Center highlights not only its trails but also its wildlife exhibits.
Treasure Island Park and Seasonal Offerings
Treasure Island Park is located at 409 N. Elm St., Troy, Ohio 45373. The City of Troy owns and rents out six kayak storage spaces there. They can be rented each year for the season from April 1 through October 31; dates and terms may change. If the storage spaces are relevant to your plans, check the current rental terms in advance.
Float Troy’s floating tents are also located in Treasure Island Park. This offering is paused in 2026 due to river construction work. This timing is important when planning a stay that year. When choosing your travel dates, you can distinguish between scheduled events, seasonal museum visits and Troy’s nature offerings.
