Montgomery brings together travel-planning themes ranging from aviation and technology to art and nature. One particularly impressive collection is at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force: it includes more than 350 aircraft and spacecraft, as well as missiles and thousands of historical objects. This lets you explore different chapters of aviation history rather than focusing on a single era or aircraft.

Aviation History and the Wright Brothers

The museum’s Air Park includes aircraft exhibits, a World War II 8th Air Force control tower, Nissen huts, and a playground. The exhibits highlight a range of subjects: alongside the aircraft, they also focus on historic buildings and the history of military aviation. Visitors especially interested in the early days of flight can find more to explore at the Wright Cycle Company Fourth Shop. There, cycling history and interactive exhibits tell the story of the connections between cycling and flight.

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park consists of six sites in and around Dayton. It honors the lives and achievements of Wilbur and Orville Wright, as well as those of poet and author Paul Laurence Dunbar. Hawthorn Hill is also in Dayton: Wilbur and Orville Wright designed the house with support from the architectural firm Schenck and Williams; it was completed in 1914. Its construction history adds a perspective on architecture and historical figures to the technology exhibits.

A museum featuring the Wright Cycle Company building and Wright Hall also tells the story of the Wright brothers. On display there is the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, regarded as the world’s first practical airplane and designated a National Historic Landmark. If you want to explore several of these subjects, you can consider cycling history, the development of flight, and the lives of the Wright brothers as distinct but connected themes for your trip.

Museums, Art, and History

At the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, the Ice Age Lobby combines life-size mammal replicas with interactive exhibits and an immersive prehistoric cave. The museum also offers interactive science learning experiences. Its collections in anthropology, geology, paleontology, and biology are available for exhibitions, education, and research. This gives a visit a different focus from the aviation museums, with subjects that lead into the sciences and a range of research fields.

The Dayton Art Institute is an architecturally and historically significant building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its collection spans 5,000 years of art history and includes Oceanic, Asian, European, and American art and crafts. Its program includes concerts, activities for families and teens, classes, and social events. The offerings range from exploring the collection to taking part in different types of events.

Carillon Historical Park is the official historical organization of Montgomery County, a 65-hectare open-air museum dedicated to history, and the main site of Dayton History. Music can be heard outdoors at the Deeds Carillon every day, every 15 minutes. Mini-concerts featuring three to five pieces each are listed at 12:00, 14:00, and 17:00. Since performance times may change, it is a good idea to check them before your visit.

Gardens, Trails, and Special Experiences

The nature-related attractions also differ considerably. Conservation Corner at Cox Arboretum preserves habitats across seven hectares, including tallgrass prairie, scrubland, and wetlands. It also features a wildlife observation shelter and environmental education. At Cox Arboretum, about 2.5 miles of trails wind through woods and meadows, and another mile of paved trails runs through landscaped gardens.

RiverScape MetroPark is at the center of a regional network of more than 300 miles of paved, car-free trails. At Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark, the Children's Discovery Garden features habitats and imaginatively designed gardens for children to explore with adult companions. A different kind of nature experience awaits at Aullwood Audubon, where three enormous wooden trolls—Bo, Bodil, and Bibbi—were created by artist Thomas Dambo.

RTA bus route 11 is listed as a way to get to Eastwood MetroPark; check the current route before traveling. Events can also give your trip a specific date-related focus: the Montgomery County Fair is an annual festival celebrating agriculture, community, and patriotism, and has been held for more than 170 years. Its dates may change. Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience takes place annually on the first weekend in October and is located along the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Buckeye Trail. Check the latest event dates for your travel year.

When planning, you can prioritize your interests: aviation and history, art, gardens, or trails in green spaces each offer a different focus. If you are planning your stay around an event, check its dates; for a visit to Eastwood MetroPark, the current bus route is a practical point of reference.
