If you’re looking for a hotel in Morgan County, you can start planning your trip around a particular focus: history, road routes, or nature. The places and themes differ in whether they tell stories of historical events, regional culture, or specific routes and landscapes. This makes it possible to tailor your visit to the interests that matter most to you.

Historical Events and Regional Culture

On January 2, 1791, Big Bottom Memorial Park was the site of an attack by about 25 Delaware and Wyandot warriors on Ohio Company settlements. The date and approximate number provide a specific historical context for the event. The Multicultural Genealogical Center offers a different perspective on the history of the Ohio River Valley. The nonprofit organization documents the contributions of multicultural and multiethnic families to the region’s social, cultural, political, religious, educational, and economic development.

Industrial history is also tied to specific names and dates: Stockport Mill was built by the Dover brothers in 1906. The Stockport Milling Company was known for its refined flours, Gold Bond Seal of Ohio and Pride of the Valley. Its products were shipped by steamboat and along the Ohio & Little Kanawha Railroad before there were year-round roads. Illustrator and artist Howard Chandler Christy, a prominent figure of the early 20th century, was born on a farm in Morgan Township.

Since 1852, the Morgan County Fair has showcased the best of Morgan County. If the fair is a reason for planning your trip, check the current event dates before finalizing your travel plans.

Road Routes and Longer Trails

The Appalachian Byway of Ohio, which is more than 120 miles long, follows State Route 78 through Morgan County and ends in Nelsonville in Athens County. For the Covered Bridge Trail, visitors can pick up a map at the Visitors Center and then explore the back roads. The combination of a designated route and a map for exploring back roads offers two different ways to plan a trip through the region by route.

The longer historic and hiking trails each have their own scale, too. The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail follows the route of the 1863 Great Indiana-Ohio Raid for 557 miles, led by Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and described as bold and innovative. Most of another 110-mile section of the Buckeye Trail runs off-road through national forest and state, local, and private lands. These figures refer to different routes and sections, so they should not be treated as directly comparable trails.

Lakes, Landscapes, and Activities

Burr Oak State Park includes a 664-acre lake with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Boating is allowed on Burr Oak Lake with motors of no more than 10 HP; check the current regulations before heading out. The Burr Oak Backpack Trail is a separate feature: seventeen of its 29 total miles form a scenic loop around Burr Oak Reservoir. The lake’s size, boating rule, and length of the described loop are distinct pieces of information to consider when planning.

Wolf Creek Wildlife Area comprises 3,978 acres of ODNR-owned land designated for public hunting and fishing. Luke Chute Conservation Area has pollinator habitats. These details highlight different aspects of the landscape: designated activities at Wolf Creek Wildlife Area and habitat at Luke Chute Conservation Area.

Art and Individual Experiences

The Ohio Art Corridor is a nonprofit outdoor art gallery featuring giant sculptures and parks along routes in southeastern Ohio. Journey with Horses offers individual coaching sessions with horses. If you’d like to include this offering in your travel plans, ask about current dates in advance. The Morgan County Fair, the art corridor, and the coaching sessions represent different themes that can’t be reduced to a single type of trip.
