Put-In-Bay brings together the legacy of Lake Erie and the War of 1812 with winemaking traditions and activities centered on nature and the water. This means there are different priorities to consider when planning a stay: historical exhibits and narrated tours, seasonal tours at Heineman’s Winery, hands-on science, and sunset walks. The activities also vary considerably in duration and subject matter.

History on Lake Erie

In Put-In-Bay, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorates those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. At the same time, the memorial celebrates the lasting peace between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. The history of war and the ideal of peace come together here.

The Memorial’s visitor center features exhibits about the War of 1812, the Battle of Lake Erie, weapons from that era, and the peace treaty. You can also watch a 15-minute park video about the battle there. The Put-in-Bay Tour Train offers a different historical perspective with a 55-minute narrated tour of Put-in-Bay. The two formats differ both in duration and in how they approach the subject: the video covers the battle, while the tour combines historical commentary with a ride through Put-in-Bay. The Put-in-Bay Antique Car Parade is a Sunday tradition.

Wine Tradition at Heineman’s Winery

Heineman’s Winery was founded by Gustav Heineman in 1888 and is rooted in Put-In-Bay’s winemaking tradition. Tours are offered there from May through October. Afterward, guests can sample wine or grape juice free of charge. Both tasting options are part of the same seasonal offering, while the wines also provide a focus of their own: Heineman’s Winery produces more than 21 wines, which visitors can enjoy in the vineyard.

Nature and Activities on Lake Erie

The Put-in-Bay Aquatic Center offers hands-on science activities focused on Lake Erie’s complex ecosystem. Children under 16 can fish for free from the fishing pier there. Kayaking is also one of the activities visitors can enjoy in Put-In-Bay. These offer different ways to explore the lake and water: science activities, fishing, and kayaking.

Perry’s Cave offers a different focus. The natural limestone cave lies 52 feet underground, adding a geological dimension to the themes of water and the lake. During a stay, activities on Lake Erie and an underground natural site can be enjoyed as distinct experiences, rather than combined into a single program.

Sunset Strolls

Put-In-Bay’s downtown harbor and the area around DeRivera Park invite visitors to take sunset strolls. This offers another focus alongside exhibits, tours, and activities: a walk at the end of the day. History, wine traditions, nature, and this end-of-day experience offer different ways to discover Put-In-Bay.
