Waterfalls and nature trails, historic homes and museums, or motorsports: Richland offers a variety of themes for a stay. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which experiences you’d like to plan. This lets you tailor your search to your interests and give your trip a clear focus.

Nature trails, waterfalls, and outdoor activities

The Gorman Nature Center covers 150 acres of forests, prairies, ponds, and streams. More than five miles of public trails wind through this varied landscape. The center also offers weekly public hikes, field trips, and nature programs. Cross-country skiing is also possible there. The nature center combines trails for independent exploration with regular group activities.

The Richland B&O Bike Trail is 18 miles long and connects four communities in Richland County. The paved route follows a former railroad line and is suitable for cycling, walking, running, and inline skating. It can be used year-round from sunrise to sunset. Those looking to compare different ways of getting around will find a route here that can be enjoyed by bike, on foot, or on inline skates.

At Fleming Falls Park and Preserve, natural history and landscape take center stage: this historic natural landmark is named after John Fleming. More than 15 cascades and waterfalls define the area, along with several miles of scenic trails and more than 100 acres of natural woodland. Hemlock Falls is another distinctive waterfall: it is in Butler, Ohio, and is nearly 100 feet high. The different details highlight what sets each place apart—at Fleming Falls, the combination of waterfalls, woodland, and trails; at Hemlock Falls, the height of the waterfall itself.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary adds wildlife watching to the nature-themed activities. Its live exhibits feature more than 30 species of native songbirds and birds of prey. At Malabar Farm State Park, a working farm and a hiking trail come together: the grounds cover 900 acres, guided tours take visitors through the Big House, and hiking is permitted on the seven-mile Pleasant Valley Bridle Trail.

Historic homes, museums, and stages

In Mansfield, Oak Hill Cottage is a carefully restored and preserved Gothic Revival landmark. This house museum displays Victorian furnishings and artifacts belonging to the Jones family. Tours begin between 2:00 and 4:30 p.m. as guests arrive and are led by docents. A visit combines the home’s architecture with insights into its furnishings and the family’s preserved belongings.

The Ohio State Reformatory offers self-guided and guided tours, including the “Hollywood Meets History Tour” and the “Shawshank Bus Tour”; tour availability may vary by season. It also offers escape-room experiences in the historic prison, and the specific scenarios may change. The Shawshank Museum at the Reformatory displays authentic props, costumes, and film memorabilia from “The Shawshank Redemption.” The focus is on both tours of the prison and its connection to the film.

Other museums highlight different aspects of history. The North Central Ohio Industrial Museum tells the stories of the people, companies, and inventions that shaped North Central Ohio. The Mansfield Fire Museum traces the development of firefighting—from bucket brigades and horse-drawn equipment to motorized apparatus. BibleWalk is the only life-size wax museum in Ohio. It features more than 100 life-size dioramas and 325 wax figures.

The Renaissance Theatre opened in 1928 as a grand movie palace. Today, its program spans a full season of live performances, including the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, Broadway musicals, concerts across various genres, comedy, films, and original theatrical productions. The Richland Carrousel Park adds a hand-carved carousel to the cultural experiences. In 1991, it opened the first new hand-carved carousel to be built and operated in the United States since the 1930s. It features 52 animal figures and two carriages.

Motorsports and driving programs

The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course covers 380 acres and has two permanent road-racing course configurations: a 2.4-mile track with 15 turns and a 2.258-mile track with 13 turns. The comparison shows the different combinations of track length and number of turns without equating the two configurations.

The Mid-Ohio School offers professional driving and motorcycle training; program details may change. The Lapping Program includes a track tour, instructor-led follow-along driving, and controlled open lapping around the entire track. The motorsports offerings described therefore range from professional instruction to a program that combines several activities on and around the track.
