In Springboro, the Historic District and the history of the Underground Railroad shape several specific cultural offerings. There are also cycling tours, city parks and the program at North Park. You can plan your stay around what interests you most: the historic site, a guided walk or outdoor activities.

Historic District and Underground Railroad

Springboro’s Historic District covers seven blocks along South Main Street (SR 73), south of Central Avenue (SR 741). It is designated a Historic District at both the federal and local levels. The streets locate the city’s historic center.

The Springboro Area Historical Museum building was constructed in 1810 and was originally the home of Welsh immigrant Griffy Griffis and his family. In the museum’s Underground Railroad Room, the permanent exhibition includes artwork, interactive exhibits and books about Springboro’s network of safe houses. The home’s architectural history and the story of the safe-house network are presented in the same museum.

At the museum, visitors can also get a brochure to start a self-guided tour of 18 surviving safe houses in the Historic District. The guided Underground Railroad walks cover a six-block radius through the historic downtown and highlight surviving sites along the way; they last 60 minutes. The brochure offers a self-guided option, while the walks are guided. Check the walk dates before planning, as they may change.

Cycling and Outdoor Activities

Various nature walks and cycling tours are offered in Springboro throughout the year. One regular event is Bike the Boro, held annually in September. It features three cycling tours and a festival program at North Park. Cyclists of all ages and ability levels can ride through Springboro. Dates and formats for future editions may change.

Another specific cycling point of interest is SPARC and Go, short for Springboro Area Recharging Center. The bicycle hub was completed in 2013 and is located on South Main Street in the Historic District. The September events and the year-round mention of tours offer different timing options: Bike the Boro takes place in September, while nature walks and cycling tours are offered throughout the year.

The City of Springboro operates and maintains nine recreational parks and more than 400 acres of open space. North Park is also home to the Dayton Children’s Hospital Playground. The 30,000-square-foot playground opened in May 2024 and is fully accessible. Its two age-appropriate areas are intended for children under five and children ages five to twelve.

Concerts and Exhibitions

From June through July, the city hosts two free outdoor concert series at North Park. Future concert programs may change. The gallery at the Springboro Performing Arts Center presents monthly exhibitions featuring works by local and regional artists working in a range of media. In addition to historic attractions, concert and gallery events offer cultural reasons to stay in Springboro.
