Afton: Route 66, Ribbon Road, and Marinas
Accommodation in Afton
Afton is located on U.S. Highway 60/69, which is also the historic U.S. Highway 66. Ribbon Road, Horse Creek Bridge, and several examples of classic roadside architecture give Afton’s Route 66 connection concrete dimensions. Marinas and boating options are another focus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Afton, you can plan your trip around your interest in road and architectural history or water activities.
Historic Roads and Route 66
Ribbon Road is a 13-mile stretch of historic road surface between Miami and Afton. It was built in the early 1920s and predates Route 66; it was also part of the original Ozark Trail Highway. The original, nine-foot-wide Ribbon Road is listed as an Oklahoma National Historic Landmark. Its state of preservation may change.
Afton’s economic history is also part of its Route 66 connection: in the 1920s and 1930s, U.S. Highway 66 brought more industry to Afton. The town’s development thus adds another perspective to the history of its roads and structures.
Bridge, Station, and Roadside Architecture
Horse Creek Bridge on the northeastern edge of Afton was built in 1936 as part of Route 66. It is a 140-foot steel girder bridge; a continuous reinforced-concrete sidewalk runs along each side. Cities Service Station offers another facet of roadside architecture: it was built in 1933 in the Mission Revival, also known as Spanish Revival, style and is significant for its connection to Route 66. The station is currently unused.
Afton also has several examples of classic roadside architecture along Route 66. Visitors interested in architectural history will find more than a single structure to explore. The Darryl Starbird National Rod and Custom Hall of Fame Museum was also located in Afton, but is no longer open.
Marinas and Boat Show
Afton offers a range of documented water activities. Sail Grand operates at Shangri-La Marina and offers Sea-Doo rides as a rental option. Thunder Bay Marina offers boat slips and docking facilities. The marina is also home to the Ugly John's Grill & Bar restaurant, whose menu includes hamburgers, sandwiches, fish, chicken, and ribs. Offerings and the menu may change.
The Mahogany & Chrome Boat Show is held annually at Cherokee Yacht Club & Marina in Afton. It brings together more than 50 boats, including historic wooden boats and retro fiberglass boats. Participants cruise on Grand Lake O' The Cherokees. The scale may vary from year to year. Dates and operating details may change; check the specific event dates if the boat show is the reason for your trip.
