In Fitzhugh, agriculture, the railroad, and community life are part of the town’s history. Fossil Creek Ranch is another event venue. If you’re looking for hotels in Fitzhugh, these topics can help you decide what brings you to the area: Would you like to learn about the community’s history, attend a church service, or travel to an event?

Agriculture, the railroad, and the town’s development

Fitzhugh was named in honor of Fitzhugh Lee. Historically, the community was shaped by agriculture, with cotton as its most important crop. The St. Louis, Oklahoma and Southern Railway laid its tracks through Fitzhugh in 1900. A cotton gin opened there by 1910. Agriculture, cotton processing, and the railroad offer different perspectives on the town’s development at the time.

Four brick buildings were added to downtown Fitzhugh in 1913. That same year, a fire destroyed the post office and three other businesses. The weekly newspaper Fitzhugh Herald began publication in February 1914 but did not last long. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) was also active in the community as a fraternal organization. Along with agriculture and the railroad, the newspaper and the fraternal organization were part of the community’s historic life.

Churches and architectural history

The Fitzhugh Methodist Church was built in 1931–32. In 1936, the First Baptist Church congregation built a new chapel. Today, First Baptist Church in Fitzhugh welcomes guests to its services; Fitzhugh United Methodist Church holds services on Sundays. If you plan to attend a service during your trip, check the latest times and arrangements before setting out.

Another point of interest in the town’s architectural history is the Fitzhugh Schoolhouse. It is a single-story, rectangular building made of rusticated, coursed stone. “Rusticated” describes a worked stone surface with a pronounced texture; “coursed” refers to masonry laid in horizontal layers. The churches are notable for their construction dates, while the Schoolhouse stands out for its form and materials—two different perspectives on local architectural history.
