Texas: Prairie, Wildlife, and History
Accommodation in Texas
For planning your trip to Texas, nature and wildlife, as well as history and culture, offer two distinct areas of focus. The specific places and topics can help guide your choice of stay.
Nature and Wildlife
The Optima National Wildlife Refuge covers 4,333 acres and is located in a central mixed-grass prairie. In the higher-elevation areas, buffalo grass, blue grama grass, sand sagebrush, and yucca shape the plant life. These plants show how the landscape varies within the refuge.
Nature-related recreational activities at the refuge include wildlife viewing and photography, as well as public hunting. If you are considering hunting, check the applicable regulations before your trip.
In Guymon, the Game Preserve is home to buffalo, Longhorn cattle, Watusi hybrids, elk, and oryx. The visitor information mentions viewing buffalo, elk, and Longhorn cattle. The preserve offers another way to experience wildlife, while prairie and nature-related recreation are the focus at Optima Refuge.
Parks and Trails in Guymon
Centennial Park has a ¼-mile loop trail and a walking tour of Guymon's history. At Sunset Lake in Thompson Park, a one-mile concrete path circles the lake. Comparing the trail lengths, the concrete path is four times as long as the loop at Centennial Park; this does not indicate walking time or difficulty.
You can fish at Sunset Lake; the lake is continuously stocked with fish. Seasonal fishing regulations may apply, so check the conditions before fishing. Pedal boats and an operating miniature train are also available at the lake. Check whether these attractions are operating before your visit.
In Guymon, U.S. Highways 54 and 64 intersect with State Highway 3. Visit Guymon provides maps and travel guides for Guymon, Black Mesa, the Playa Lakes Loop, and the five-state area. The range of regional materials available may change.
History, Art, and Events
The No Man's Land Museum offers a comprehensive look at the Oklahoma Panhandle and neighboring regions. Two historical dates add to this regional focus: Old Hardesty was a trading post established in No Man's Land in 1886; on May 2, 1890, No Man's Land became part of the Oklahoma Territory. This makes it possible to explore the area's history through the transition from the trading-post era to its later territorial status.
The Texas County Courthouse is a four-story red-brick building with classical architectural elements. For visitors interested in architecture, it offers a tangible contrast with the historical subjects of the museum and the former trading post.
Pioneer Days has been a Guymon tradition since 1933 and includes arts and crafts. The Pioneer Days Celebration & PRCA Rodeo takes place every year and is among the Oklahoma Panhandle's signature events. The rodeo draws thousands of visitors to the Guymon arena each year. Event dates vary, so check the dates for your travel year before planning. The Bacon BBQ Brews & Blues Festival is also associated with Guymon; this does not imply that it takes place every year.
The All Fired Up Gallery & Art Center displays visual art, jewelry, ceramics, and sculptures created locally by regional artists. Offerings include art classes for all ages and monthly artist presentations. Class and presentation schedules may change, so check the current program before planning a visit.
