Discover Frederick: History, Culture, and Nature
Accommodation in Frederick
When looking for a hotel in Frederick, it helps to have a clear focus for your trip: local history, theater, historical collections, barn quilt designs, or nature. These themes differ in character—from a dated visit to an annual festival to habitats and birdwatching. Plan your trip around what interests you most during your stay.
History, Theater, and Collections
In the spring of 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt visited Frederick to meet Jack Abernathy. The Ramona Theatre was built in 1929, is an example of the Spanish Colonial style, and hosts concerts and theater performances. This places a specific event in local history, a named architectural style, and live entertainment side by side as distinct cultural interests.
The Pioneer Heritage Townsite represents the prairies and southwestern Oklahoma during the 1920s. The Tillman County Historical Museum displays historic clothing, musical instruments, children’s toys, machinery, wartime items, household items, and ladies’ hats. The range of topics therefore extends from a portrayal of the prairies and southwestern Oklahoma to a collection of varied historical objects. If you enjoy exploring history through tangible objects, the museum’s collection offers several points of interest.
The Abernathy Boys exhibit includes an authentic replica of the Brush Car that the Abernathy brothers rode home from New York City. The vehicle model provides a tangible point of reference for the brothers’ story. The Crawford Collection includes about 170 mounted trophy animals gathered from hunts around the world; visitors can view the animals up close. The focus here is on the approximate size of the collection, its international origins, and the opportunity to see the animals up close.
Nature and Getting Around
Hackberry Flat WMA lies southeast of Frederick and combines higher ground with wetlands. A total of 29 different shorebird species have been recorded there. For nature enthusiasts, both the varied habitats and the named bird group are points of interest.
From Frederick’s southern edge, Hackberry Flat Center can be reached via Highway 183, Airport Road, and County Road N2240. A nature trail near Frederick leads to a wildlife observation blind at the Center. This provides both a specific route and a destination along the nature trail.
Events and Barn Quilt Designs
The Tillman County Free Fair is held annually in Frederick. The program includes a livestock show, art competitions, vendor and food stands, tractor-pulling contests, and carnival attractions. The competitions, stands, and rides bring together different aspects of the fair’s program. If you want to plan your trip around the fair, check the dates for your chosen year.
More than 50 barn quilt designs can be seen on the Tillman County Heritage Barn Quilt Trail in Frederick, displayed on houses, garages, fences, barns, and buildings downtown. Maps and information are available from the Frederick Chamber of Commerce, Very Good Coffee Co, Box Inc, KC’s, and Frederick Ace Hardware, as well as in the form of a downloadable map.
