Reedsport and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

When looking for hotels in Reedsport, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: wildlife viewing, outdoor activities or cultural history. Reedsport is located in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Other specific points of interest in Reedsport include the Umpqua River, parks and cultural history exhibits. The places to visit are distinct: a viewpoint for Roosevelt elk, a range of park and hiking options, and a historic steam donkey and exhibits about culture and nature. This can help you decide which themes you want to shape your stay.

Wildlife Viewing and Trails

The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is three miles east of Reedsport on Highway 38. From a viewpoint with an information board, you can observe a herd of 60 to 100 Roosevelt elk that lives there year-round. The number of animals and conditions on site may vary. If wildlife viewing is your main reason for traveling, you’ll find a designated viewing point there; plan for changing conditions rather than a fixed number of animals.

Parks and Trails in Reedsport

Bicentennial Park has a 9-hole disc golf course with two layouts, a tree-shaded walking path and a bridge over the creek. The park combines a sport-oriented activity with a path for walking; the bridge is a distinctive feature. Lion’s Park offers something different: it has a skatepark. Park facilities may change; check current conditions before your visit if needed.

The Levee Loop Trail adds a municipal trail system for daytime hikes to the park options. This lets you choose between the specific activities offered in the parks and setting out for a hike as a goal in its own right.

Rainbow Plaza and the Umpqua Discovery Center

At Rainbow Plaza stands a 1915 steam donkey made by Smith & Watson Iron Works, known as “Machine No. 36.” This steam donkey makes the history of technology visible through a single, precisely identified object. The Rainbow Plaza Boat Launch offers public restrooms, picnic tables and benches with views along the Umpqua River. You can plan to stop here for a break by the river. The steam donkey’s display conditions and the facilities at the launch may change; check current conditions on site before your visit.

The Umpqua Discovery Center on the Reedsport riverfront explores cultural history in its “Tidewaters and Time” exhibit. By contrast, “Pathways to Discovery” takes visitors through a simulated outdoor experience in natural habitats. This contrast makes it easy to choose a theme: one exhibit focuses on cultural history, while the other offers a recreated nature experience. Another specific detail is the 35-foot-tall periscope in the community room. The center is located at 409 Riverfront Way. If you’re planning a visit, check current visiting options in advance.
