Jefferson County offers a range of options to help you plan your trip: canyon views, routes through the landscape, and places where history and culture take center stage. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first choose the experiences you want to shape your trip. The suggestions below range from short walks to viewpoints to longer tours and visits focused on history or culture.

Canyons, Rivers and Wildlife Watching

Cove Palisades State Park encompasses the canyons of the Deschutes River and the Crooked River. At Round Butte Overlook Park, a trail about half a mile long leads to views of the canyon and the waters below. The park is also a good place to watch wildlife, including bald eagles and ospreys. However, sightings are not guaranteed.

In the observation building at Round Butte Overlook Park and its surrounding area, you’ll find information panels about the Round Butte Hydroelectric Project and the fish and wildlife of the Deschutes River. This lets you consider the views and the information as distinct parts of a visit: the trail leads to views over the canyon and water, while the panels provide background on the project, river, and wildlife.

The Metolius River is designated a National Wild and Scenic River and flows through an old forest characterized by ponderosa pines. For a longer hike, consider the 5.5-mile West Metolius River loop. Trail access is seasonal; check which conditions apply on your visit date before you go. Fly fishing for rainbow trout, kokanee, and mountain whitefish is also possible along the river. Regulations and conditions may change, so check them in advance.

Cycling Routes and Route Planning

The Madras Mountain Views Scenic Bikeway is 29 miles long and runs through farmland along the canyon rim of Lake Billy Chinook. Near mile 20, a detour of about half a mile leads to Round Butte Overlook Park. This allows you to plan the bikeway’s distance and the additional route to the viewpoint separately.

Madras Hay Creek is a 30-mile loop with changing surfaces, including asphalt, hard-packed gravel with fine pumice, and coarse gravel. Surface conditions may change after rain. The route passes Hay Creek Ranch, which was founded in 1873. When planning, it’s especially important to account for the total distance and the changes between the surfaces listed above.

Experience History and Culture

The Jefferson County Courthouse, locally known as the “Old Courthouse,” is a 1917 building in Madras, Jefferson County. The one-room schoolhouse of the Jefferson County Historical Society offers another way to explore regional history: visitors can tour it and experience historical school conditions. Check in advance whether visits are available on your chosen date.

On the grounds of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds is an authentically furnished farmhouse dating to 1914. The Museum at Warm Springs dedicates its permanent exhibition to the culture and history of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Visitors can also learn about the heritage of the Wasco, Warm Springs, and Paiute tribes of the reservation in Central Oregon.

The Erickson Aircraft Collection, near Madras Municipal Airport, displays more than 20 aircraft from World War II. It adds a look at aviation history to the historic sites. If you’re choosing between historic buildings, an exhibition on tribal history, and aircraft for your trip, you can give each topic a different priority rather than grouping all the visits under a single theme.

Special Visitor Experiences

Cascade Lavender combines a visit to a lavender farm with a U-pick experience, where you can pick the plants yourself. Seasonal availability may vary. Lavender refreshments are offered to groups that book in advance, so plan this part of your visit with the required advance reservation.

At New Basin Distilling Company, visitors can sample vodka, gin, and whiskey in the tasting room. Since operating details may change, check the latest visitor information before planning a visit. This keeps the farm visit, group offering, and tasting clearly separate as options in your plans.

Set your travel priorities based on route distances and visitor requirements.
