History and Design

The family behind the Gilchrist Timber Company founded Gilchrist in 1938. The town was established as a self-sufficient community with homes, schools, and shops, and was among the last company towns still operating in Oregon. This development is reflected in different types of buildings: public and commercial buildings were designed in the Scandinavian style. The 128 original homes featured stenciled patterns in bright colors and understated decorative details.

Gilchrist Mall as a Local Center

The Gilchrist Mall continues to serve as a local center. It houses a post office, a grocery store, a bank, a county library, and various small shops. Individual tenants may change. The Mall was designed by Oregon architect Hollis Johnston and is described as the “oldest shopping center in rural Oregon.”

Mill Pond and Gilchrist State Forest

Mill Pond is a scenic body of water in the center of Gilchrist. Activities by the water include photography, peaceful walks, and birdwatching. Conditions for visits may vary. Mill Pond therefore offers a different kind of activity from exploring the town’s history and the Mall’s buildings.

Gilchrist State Forest covers more than 72,000 acres and is located near the communities of Gilchrist and Crescent. Its gravel roads are open unless marked as closed. Follow the land manager’s notices.
