Waldport borders the Pacific Ocean and Alsea Bay. This gives you several different ways to plan your trip: beachcombing, trails, water activities, seasonal fishing and insights into local history. You can choose Waldport based on whether you’re mainly looking to experience the coast, are interested in the river or want to learn more about the bridge and life on the bay.

Beaches and Trails

Patterson State Park is the largest beach park in Waldport. Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site offers miles of flat sandy beaches, inviting you to beachcomb and explore the shoreline. A short hike from the recreation site leads to the mouth of Alsea Bay, where visitors can windsurf or go crabbing. Beachcombing and the short hike to the mouth offer different experiences: one follows the sandy coastline, while the other leads to a specific destination on the bay.

The Woodland Trail connects the south end of Crestline Park with Kendall Ballfield on Starr Street. Those interested in trails in Waldport will find a route here between two clearly named places. Keady Wayside has a viewing platform, picnic tables and beach access. As facilities may change, it’s a good idea to check conditions before your visit.

Water, Fishing and Nature

Public facilities at the Port of Alsea in Waldport include a boat ramp, boat slips and a picnic area. The boating facilities and picnic area cater to different interests for a visit by the water. Visitors can also kayak on the Alsea River or one of its tributaries.

The fishing opportunities described on the Alsea River vary by season and section of the river. In fall, Chinook salmon run; fishing methods include trolling, bobber fishing, bait fishing and fly fishing. In winter, anglers use drift boats on the upper Alsea River to look for winter steelhead. Regulations may change, so check the rules in effect before fishing.

Birdwatching is also seasonal: More than 400 bird species may be observed around Waldport, depending on the season. These seasonal wildlife observations offer another way to explore the area, alongside the specific fall and winter activities on the river.

Bridge, Museum and Events

The Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Visitor Center opened in 1991, at the same time as the new Alsea Bay Bridge. The Alsea Bay Bridge Visitor Center features photographs, archives, pieces of the original bridge and a scale model of the new bridge. The Waldport Heritage Museum displays artifacts, stories, photographs and tools connected with life on the bay and the Pacific Ocean. While the visitor center focuses on the bridge and its original construction, the museum turns its attention to life on the bay and ocean.

Waldport’s recurring Beach, Bike & Blues Festival features live blues music, craft-oriented food and drinks, and vendor booths. Event details vary by season. If the festival interests you, check the dates and program for your travel period in advance.
