Carlton combines wine tastings in its historic district with local history, seasonal offerings and parks. If you’re looking for a hotel in Carlton, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to plan tastings in town, Carlton Crush in September or time in the parks? Local offerings range from multiple tasting rooms to seasonal events.

Wine Tastings and Wine Country

There are 20 wine tasting rooms in the historic district, all within four walkable blocks. This gives you a clearly defined area to explore for tastings in town; individual businesses and their operations may change. Tastings at the Carlton Winemakers Studio are updated weekly. Flâneur Wines is located in downtown Carlton in a century-old grain silo and offers curated tastings, small bites and tours.

The buildings also shape each tasting experience: The Ken Wright Cellars tasting room is in a renovated 1920s train depot in downtown Carlton, where you can taste single-vineyard Pinot Noir. The Celestial Hill Vineyard tasting room is in a renovated locomotive repair shop. The winery also offers tours through the forests surrounding its four vineyards. Confirm availability before your visit if you’re interested in these tours.

More than 50 vineyards are a short drive from Carlton in the North Willamette Valley. This extends the experience beyond the town’s tasting rooms into the region’s wine country. Carlton Hill Vineyard and Winery has a hillside croquet lawn overlooking Mount Hood and the Yamhill Valley. Visitor offerings and access arrangements may change, so check before visiting.

The Ground offers farm tours and seasonal visits; seasonal arrangements may change and should be confirmed in advance. The Ground Market sells pasture-raised meat, fresh farm eggs, seasonal local produce and carefully selected pantry goods. Selection and operating details may change.

Local History

De Ponte Cellars’ Lonesome Rock Firehouse Tasting Room is located in Carlton’s former firehouse, built in 1943. The town’s history also includes a change in the train stop: At the site of present-day Carlton, a flag stop was first tested before a regular stop was established. These two details offer different insights into the town’s history—one through a repurposed building, the other through the development of the train stop.

Parks and Carlton Crush

Wennerberg Park has baseball fields, two playgrounds, reservable picnic shelters, a disc golf course, restrooms and river access. Its amenities may change during maintenance or improvement work. Ladd Park has a seasonal outdoor pool, a basketball court, picnic areas, a playground and restrooms. Seasonality is especially relevant at Ladd Park if you plan to use the outdoor pool.

Carlton Crush takes place every year in September during the peak harvest season. The program includes a team grape-stomping competition, live music, local food and arts and crafts vendors. Individual events may vary from year to year; if the festival is a deciding factor in your stay, check the current dates.

When to Plan Your Hotel Search

This gives you a practical timeline for choosing a hotel: Carlton Crush takes place annually in September, tastings at the Carlton Winemakers Studio are updated weekly, and the outdoor pool at Ladd Park is seasonal. Choose your travel dates based on what you want to focus on, and check current festival dates, tasting selections or pool operations before you arrive.
