Greene County offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: historical collections, riverside trails, outdoor recreation, and recurring events. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to start by choosing the experiences that interest you most. Historic sites tell the story of the region’s development, while trails and parks offer different highlights.

Collections, History, and Classes

The Greene County Historical Society Museum is located in the former Greene County Home, also known as the Almshouse or Poor Farm. The building opened in 1862. The museum houses well over 30,000 artifacts related to the heritage of Greene County and the surrounding region. The collection can be complemented by a printing exhibit with working printing presses, bringing historical tools of the trade into focus alongside the artifacts.

Another historic stop is Greene Academy, the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains. Today, the Academy offers free classes in painting, scrapbooking, and crafts; class times may change. This makes it possible to combine a visit focused on history with an opportunity to get creative yourself.

Trails and Landscapes

The Warrior Trail and the Greene River Trail differ considerably in their designated lengths: the Warrior Trail is 67 miles long, while the Greene River Trail is 7 miles long. The Warrior Trail begins in Greensboro on the Monongahela River and ends in Moundsville, West Virginia, on the Ohio River. It is more than 5,000 years old and was used by Indigenous peoples for trade and hunting. Access is available where the trail crosses a road; yellow markers and mileposts mark its route.

The Greene River Trail is suited to hiking, jogging, and cycling. It runs along the Monongahela River through Greene County’s coal region. Remnants of former mining operations can be seen along the trail, including older coal-processing and loading facilities. There is parking and a public restroom at the trailhead in Rices Landing. The activities available and the region’s mining history each give the trail a distinct focus.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Mason-Dixon Historical Park has six hiking trails and a mountain biking trail. Dunkard Creek also runs through the park, where people of all experience levels can fish. Tucker Falls is another waterfall in the park. Parking and public restrooms are available. Because trail offerings and local facilities can change, it’s a good idea to check their current status before your visit.

Ryerson Station State Park also offers ways to combine activity with programming: there are evening programs on summer weekends, and guided hikes are offered several times a week. Since seasonal schedules are important for planning, check the current events calendar before your visit.

Motocross takes center stage at High Point Raceway near Mount Morris. The racetrack has been in operation since 1976. Its location in an amphitheater allows visitors to see the track from every angle. The venue’s history and the racetrack’s distinctive layout set this experience apart from the trails and hiking opportunities in the parks.

Events and Special Experiences

The Rain Day Festival takes place annually on July 29 in Waynesburg. The program includes live entertainment, arts and crafts, food, and carnival games for children. Specific program details may change, so check the information for the festival in question in advance.

For a wine tasting, Thistlethwaite Vineyards offers a distinctive historic setting: its tasting room opened in 2008 in the farm’s original barn. Free wine tastings are offered; check whether they are currently available before visiting. At Lippencott Alpacas, farm tours give you the chance to meet alpacas and baby alpacas. An appointment is generally required. These experiences offer different highlights—from wine and farm history to encounters with animals—and may help shape your choice of activities during your stay.
