Adamsburg’s history can be explored through its church congregation and historic sites in the surrounding area. In the town, the founding of a Lutheran church in the 19th century and the later establishment of a Sunday school are central. In the surrounding area, cemetery and battlefield history reach back to earlier periods. This distinction helps you view local church history and regional sites of remembrance as two different focuses of your stay.

Church History in Adamsburg

In 1849, a group from the Brush Creek congregation founded a new church in Adamsburg called the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Trinity Church of the Borough and Vincinity of Adamsburg. A year later, a brick church was built and dedicated for this congregation. The founding, construction, and dedication were therefore clearly separated in time: 1849 marks the founding, while 1850 marks the construction and dedication of the brick building.

A later milestone came during the tenure of Reverend Charles Seaman, who served in Adamsburg from 1887 to 1889. During this time, a Lutheran Sunday school was established at Adamsburg Church. It adds an educational aspect to the church’s history, distinct from the founding and construction of the church.

Historic Sites in the Surrounding Area

The history of the area surrounding Adamsburg reaches back to 1782. Brush Creek Cemetery was established when the original Brush Creek log church burned down. Since the American Revolutionary War, the cemetery has served as the final resting place for veterans of every American war.

Bushy Run Battlefield is also nearby. It preserves and interprets the site of a decisive battle between British troops and Indigenous groups during Pontiac’s War, from 1763 to 1764. The battlefield grounds cover more than 200 acres and include scenic woods, meadows, and a historic landscape. The Edge Hill Trail at Bushy Run Battlefield is about one mile long. The two measurements refer to different things: an approximate trail length and the area of the entire battlefield.

Chronologically, the 1763–64 conflict predates the founding of Brush Creek Cemetery in 1782. The two sites therefore represent different historical themes in the Adamsburg area.
