Delmont: History, Trails and Events
Accommodation in Delmont
Delmont combines a historic town center with opportunities for outdoor recreation and seasonal events. The Salem Crossroads Historic District showcases the town’s architectural history; the Westmoreland Heritage Trail and Newhouse Park offer different highlights. Depending on your interests, you can include history, activities and events in your travel plans.
Historic Town Center and Local History
The Salem Crossroads Historic District includes about 64 historically significant buildings in Delmont’s historic town center. They include four log houses and numerous Greek Revival-style buildings. In 1978, the Salem Crossroads (Delmont) Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Delmont’s past transportation also shaped the town: the historic village developed into a transportation hub served by several stagecoach lines. They carried both freight and passengers. The Delmont Historical Preservation Society serves as steward of the historic buildings and landmarks and shares Delmont’s history through educational programs, events and exhibits.
Trails and Recreation in Delmont
The Westmoreland Heritage Trail runs along an 8.5-mile section from Saltsburg to Delmont. The stated length may change with future extensions. The trail is suitable for hiking, jogging, cycling and cross-country skiing. This offers several ways to get active, from walking to cycling and cross-country skiing.
Newhouse Park has a walking and running trail, a renovated sand volleyball court and play equipment for several age groups. While the Heritage Trail is described as a section between Saltsburg and Delmont, the park brings a trail, sports area and play facilities together in one place. These different highlights can help you choose activities that fit your travel plans.
