If you’re looking for a hotel in Jamestown, your trip interests can guide you toward the town’s different sides. Coastal views at Beavertail State Park, marine life at Beavertail Aquarium and the lighthouse history of the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum each offer a distinct point of interest. There’s also the former military history of Fort Wetherill and the working farmland of Watson Farm. You can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most.

Coastal Views and Marine Life

Beavertail State Park has four overlooks with coastal views. If you’d like to see the rocky coast from more than an overlook, you can also walk along the shore. This gives you two different ways to experience the landscape: views of the coast from an overlook and a walk along its rocky shoreline. The park is a specific destination for travelers who want to explore coastal scenery on foot.

Beavertail Aquarium offers another perspective on the coast. There, you can learn about the local marine life of Narragansett Bay for free. The tanks simulate the coastal habitat of Rhode Island. The aquarium focuses on the bay’s marine life and the coastal environment where it lives. Together with the overlooks and rocky shoreline, this offers another way to explore Jamestown’s coast.

Lighthouse History and Historic Sites

The Beavertail Lighthouse Museum is located at the site of North America’s third-oldest lighthouse. Its exhibits and artifacts explore the history of Beavertail Lighthouse, its keepers and their stories. If you’re interested in maritime history, this focus takes you from the lighthouse itself to the people associated with it. The Fort Burnside Communication and Coastal Defense Museum offers a different focus: it is located on the grounds of Beavertail State Park and can be visited by appointment only. Be sure to plan your visit with this access requirement in mind.

Fort Wetherill and Conanicut Battery also add to the historical perspective, though with different areas of focus. Fort Wetherill State Park is on Conanicut Island in Jamestown and was a coastal defense battery and training camp. Conanicut Battery is a historic property listed in Jamestown; access is via Beavertail Road. Fort Wetherill’s former military use and the historic status of Conanicut Battery offer two distinct points of interest for travelers who want to include Jamestown’s history in their plans.

Agriculture and Outdoor Activities

Watson Farm is a 265-acre working farm. It raises Red Devon cattle and multicolored sheep. The farm offers a self-guided tour during its opening hours. This lets you explore the property on foot at your own pace, taking in its agricultural use and the animals mentioned. Seasonal opening dates may change; check the current hours before your visit.

The boat ramp at Fort Wetherill State Park is also of interest to divers: dive clubs use it year-round for scuba diving. Individual operating conditions may change. If a dive is part of your travel plans, check the current conditions in advance. Jamestown’s different attractions—coastal views, marine life, historic sites, agriculture and diving—can each be incorporated into your plans with their own conditions in mind.
