Kiawah Island offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: trails and nature, the beach, golf, and history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, it helps to first decide which activities you want to shape your daily plans. Then you can compare specific hotel offers based on the details that matter to you.

Trails and Nature

Kiawah Island’s recreational trail network includes 19 miles of paved trails, as well as several gravel paths for walking. The different surfaces give you a practical guide when planning walks. Kiawah Island Golf Resort offers bicycle rentals for exploring more than 30 miles of scenic trails and 10 miles of beach. Bicycle rental availability may change; check before making your plans.

The Kiawah Island Nature Center offers guided wildlife tours by land and water. Tour schedules may change, so it’s worth checking the current program if you’d like to plan a tour. The center also has animal exhibits featuring diamondback terrapins, alligators, and snakes. Tours and exhibits offer different ways to engage with wildlife; facility details may change.

Marsh Island Park is one of the preserved natural areas of the Conservancy of the Sea Islands and is open to the public. This natural area is a coastal island with a natural habitat for wildlife. Guided activities, animal exhibits, and a publicly accessible natural area thus offer different ways to focus on nature.

Planning Beach Access

On Kiawah Island, 26 community boardwalks provide easy access to the ten-mile beach. Currently, 20 of the 26 boardwalks lead to the beach via a ramp (as of June 23, 2026). Since infrastructure can change, check current accessibility before your visit. A beach wheelchair can be reserved at the Sandcastle at least 24 hours before your visit; the reservation process may also change, so check the latest information in advance.

History, Golf, and the Lowcountry

The Kiawah were the first inhabitants of Kiawah Island and a subtribe of the Cusabo on the South Carolina coast. In 1670, Cassique, chief of the Kiawah Indians, led English colonists to settle near Charlestowne Landing. These two historical references span the island’s first inhabitants and a specific event in 1670.

The Ocean Course is located at the easternmost end of Kiawah Island. Ten holes are along the Atlantic, while eight more run parallel to it. The details refer both to the course’s location on the island and to the orientation of its holes—a specific point of reference for anyone including golf in their travel plans.

The Mingo Point Oyster Roast and BBQ at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is considered a true Lowcountry tradition. Dates and programs may change; check current event details if you’d like to include it in your trip.
