In Cherokee County, visitor interests range from trails and American Revolutionary War sites to fishing, museums and the Peach Festival. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can start by considering whether nature trails, historical attractions or an event date will be the main focus of your stay.

A Historic Route Through Four States

One of Cherokee County’s attractions is the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. It stretches 330 miles through four states and follows the route taken by the patriot militia during the Kings Mountain Campaign of 1780. You can also explore the trail via a signed commemorative driving route along existing state roads. This highlights the historic route and exploring it by car as two distinct aspects of the trail experience.

Revolutionary War Sites

Kings Mountain National Military Park preserves the site of the battle fought on October 7, 1780. The American victory ranks among the important events of the Revolutionary War. Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates a different site: there, Daniel Morgan’s army won a victory for the American revolutionaries through a double envelopment. The two sites offer distinct historical perspectives—one preserves the site of the Battle of Kings Mountain, while the other recalls Morgan’s tactical victory.

Trails of Different Lengths

Kings Mountain National Military Park has about 16 miles of backcountry trails. Several miles of the Lake Whelchel Trail are part of the certified Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. The Cherokee Ford Trail, by contrast, is a loop just over a mile long, with gravel and natural surfaces. These distances refer to different offerings: backcountry trails, a section of the certified historic trail, and a single loop.

The Cherokee Ford Trail runs along the Broad River, where Patriot troops crossed the river on October 7, 1780. The trail description is thus connected to a specific historical event. Its approximate length, loop format and stated surface types also offer practical points of reference to help you distinguish it from the longer trail and trail networks.

Fishing and a 19th-Century Farm

At Kings Mountain State Park, you can fish from a rental Jon boat on 65-acre Lake York. Fish species listed include bass, sunfish, crappie and catfish. The description specifies the type of boat, the lake and the fish species the fishing opportunity is geared toward.

The Living History Farm at Kings Mountain State Park offers a different focus. It is a replica of a 19th-century Southern farm. The site includes a barn, a cotton gin, and a blacksmith and carpentry shop. These buildings and work areas give the exhibit its specific agricultural and craft-related context.

Museum, Peach Festival and Market

The Cherokee County Museum offers hands-on and interactive experiences related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its exhibits and interactive offerings also cover Indigenous peoples, the Revolutionary War, Thicketty Fort, and geology and mining. You can also begin a journey along the South Carolina Liberty Trail at the museum.

The South Carolina Peach Festival began in 1976 as a weekend event celebrating the peach industry. It takes place every July in Cherokee County, during peak peach season.

The Gaffney Station Farmers Market offers another way to explore local produce and crafts. It sells fresh fruit and vegetables, other produce, raw agricultural products and handmade craft items. Along with the trail, history and museum offerings, the market provides its own glimpse into the region’s agricultural and craft traditions.
